Release of Iona in Papara: A New Beginning for a Green Turtle Rescued in Reao

QUI-border

A beautiful story of resilience, solidarity, and marine life protection in Polynesia.

In December 2024, Iona, an adult male green turtle, was released back into the wild on the beach of Papara, Tahiti, after two months of intensive care at our rehabilitation center.

A Turtle Rescued in Reao

Iona was found trapped in a fishing net at Reao by the association Clermont Tonnerre. He was severely injured — with numerous wounds on his flippers and shell, as well as a bone infection.

485082755_1061467469352298_4468305337936493560_n

He was taken care of at our center thanks to an extraordinary chain of solidarity:

  • Transfer arranged by Air Tahiti

  • With the support of the Ocean Guardians Network,

  • And the Environment Directorate of French Polynesia.

Two Months of Care and Monitoring

During his stay, Iona received specialized veterinary care, daily monitoring, and a lot of attention from our team and volunteers committed to marine species conservation. His gradual recovery was a strong sign of his resilience… and of the importance of human intervention in the face of threats to marine wildlife.

Released in Papara: A Powerful and Emotional Moment

It was on the beach of Papara that Iona returned to his natural habitat, witnessed with emotion by the participants who came to celebrate this important milestone in his journey.

A big mauruuru to everyone present, as well as to our partners who contributed to the success of this release:

  • Richard Bailey, our President,

  • The Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Culture,

  • The High Commission of the Republic in French Polynesia,

Tracking Sea Turtles by Satellite: Innovations for Their Conservation in French Polynesia

QUI-border

Since 2007, the association Te mana o te moana has been committed to an ambitious and innovative project: the satellite tracking of sea turtles in French Polynesia. By using cutting-edge technology, this program provides valuable insights into the migratory behavior of these iconic species, helping to ensure their protection.

Tags to Better Understand the Oceanic Routes of Turtles

In partnership with the Environment Directorate of French Polynesia (DIREN), approximately 40 satellite tags have already been deployed on several species of sea turtles, notably green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata).

These transmitters, carefully attached to the turtles’ shells, allow to:

  • Track their movements in the Pacific Ocean, especially during migration periods,

  • Measure environmental data such as water temperature,

  • Collect valuable information for scientific research and conservation efforts.

Tracking Conducted from Several Islands and Atolls

Te mana o te moana has contributed to the tagging of turtles at various sites across Polynesia, with a renewed momentum recently given to this program thanks to the support of Aquarium La Rochelle, DIREN, and The Brando.

Juvenile Turtles Tagged on the Tetiaroa Atoll

At the same time, 10 resident juvenile green turtles of the Tetiaroa Atoll have been fitted with acoustic tags. This system allows tracking their distribution within the lagoon and studying:

  • Their behavior,

  • Their movements on a small scale,

  • Their use of the marine habitat.

Promising Results Under Analysis

The initial results of the program are very encouraging. The recorded tracks reveal sometimes unexpected routes and highlight how far sea turtles travel across the Pacific.

Ongoing analyses will soon provide a clearer understanding of their migratory behavior, site fidelity, and the threats they may encounter at sea.

Technology Serving Nature

The use of technology, combined with field expertise, represents a major advancement for marine conservation. With these tools, Te mana o te moana strengthens its mission: to protect sea turtles and raise awareness among future generations about their preservation.

Arrival of hatchling green turtles at the care center: welcome to ArcHonu, Tatiavao, and Teiho!

QUI-border

In recent weeks, our care center has welcomed three new young green turtles, freshly hatched from their nests. Originating from Tetiaroa and Rangiroa, these hatchlings were taken in by our team after being found in distress. Today, they are receiving the necessary care in the hope that one day they will return to the ocean in full health.

Three stories, one shared goal: giving them a second chance

ArcHonu (Tetiaroa)

Found in January 2025, ArcHonu had superficial lesions on her body and a partially missing left front flipper. She is now comfortably settled in the nursery, under close supervision by our team.

Tatiavao (Rangiroa)

Named after the motu where she was found, Tatiavao was discovered trapped in her nest, weak and without energy. She is now just over two months old and is also enjoying the comfort of the nursery to regain her strength.

Teiho (Tetiaroa)

Teiho, the youngest of the three, is experiencing a delay in absorbing her yolk reserves after hatching. She is currently being cared for in the treatment room, where she will continue to grow for a few more weeks before joining her companions.

RelaisDesOutremer – Protecting Sea Turtles: The Government and Associations United to Preserve the Ocean in Polynesia

QUI-border

On the occasion of the Year of the Sea, an official delegation visited the atoll of Tetiaroa to highlight concrete actions taken for the preservation of marine biodiversity, particularly sea turtles. This visit is part of the momentum leading up to the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), to be held in Nice in June 2025.

A Symbolic Visit to Tetiaroa

The High Commissioner of the Republic in French Polynesia, Éric SPITZ, accompanied by the Polynesian Minister of Research and Blue Economy, Taivini TEAI, visited Tetiaroa on Tuesday, April 16, 2025. They were welcomed by:

  • Richard Bailey, President-Founder of Te mana o te moana,

  • The Tetiaroa Society, a key player in conservation at Tetiaroa.

The goal? To highlight the initiatives carried out on the ground for the protection of sea turtles and the marine environment.

1738737960646

Three Key Action Areas for Conservation at Tetiaroa

Te mana o te moana and the Tetiaroa Society work together to preserve the atoll of Tetiaroa through three main pillars of action:

1. Conservation of Marine and Terrestrial Biodiversity

With a particular focus on sea turtle protection, the association has cared for over 650 turtles in 20 years, as highlighted by Cécile Gaspar, director of Te mana o te moana.

2. Environmental Education

More than 142,000 children have been made aware of marine issues through the association’s educational programs, a fundamental pillar for building a more sustainable future.

3. Scientific Research for Sustainable Management

Tetiaroa has become a true open-air laboratory. The research conducted here supports eco-responsible management policies for the island environment.

A Strong and Exemplary State-Association Partnership

For several years, the State has actively supported Te mana o te moana, with nearly 20 million FCFP in funding and the involvement of civic service volunteers. This support enables the association to continue its field missions, closely aligned with current environmental challenges.

Five Strong Commitments for the Ocean Conference in Nice

The actions of Te mana o te moana align perfectly with the five commitments made by French Polynesia for UNOC3:

  • Preserve coral reefs and lagoons (with the Ifrecor Initiative),

  • Strengthen knowledge of the deep sea,

  • Promote a unique marine protection model,

  • Integrate the ocean into the 2030 sustainable innovation strategy,

  • Develop large-scale marine renewable energies.

Looking Back on Te mana o te moana’s 20th Anniversary Evening – An Unforgettable Moment!

QUI-border

On December 19, 2024, we had the immense pleasure of celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Te mana o te moana association at the prestigious Intercontinental Tahiti Resort & Spa. A remarkable venue for an equally exceptional event, marked by gratitude and a strong commitment to environmental stewardship.

20 Years of Commitment to Marine Environmental Protection in Polynesia

Since its creation in 2004, Te mana o te moana has been passionately dedicated to the preservation of marine wildlife and the education of younger generations. Through hands-on fieldwork, innovative educational programs, and numerous initiatives in collaboration with local and international partners, our association has established itself as a key player in the protection of sea turtles in French Polynesia.

An Emotion-Filled Anniversary Evening

This 20th anniversary was a wonderful opportunity to reunite with our partners, donors, employees, volunteers, interns, and friends of the association in a festive and warm atmosphere. The evening was highlighted by:

  • Inspiring speeches recalling the key moments of these two decades,
  • A tribute to the founders and pillars of Te mana o te moana,
  • Moving testimonials from former volunteers and collaborators,
  • A vibrant Polynesian cultural performance,
  • And of course, a cocktail dinner featuring local flavors.

A huge thank you to our community

We warmly thank everyone who attended, as well as those who have supported us from afar throughout all these years. Your commitment, generosity, and trust enable us to continue carrying out our missions with determination. Thanks also to our institutional partners, corporate sponsors, volunteers, and board members for their valuable contributions.

And now, looking ahead to the future!

Building on these first 20 years, we look to the future with hope and ambition. Many projects are underway to strengthen our impact, expand our awareness efforts, and contribute even more to the preservation of French Polynesia’s marine ecosystems.
