Week for Water and Climate Change https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/week-for-water-and-climate-change/ Tue, 20 Mar 2012 05:16:06 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.com/?p=5676 The Week for Water and Climate Change took place from the 19th to the 23rd of March.

For this occasion, the La Mennais Highschool (2200 students) in Papeete, Tahiti, organised several awareness raising workshops for the students.

Elodie Favre, a student in Biology, currently doing an internship with te mana o te moana, was in charge of the part concerning “environment” on the 20th and 21st of March. She visited 8 classes, ranging from 6e to post-baccalaureate classes.

In every class, a 26-minutes video was viewed. This film, called “Honu Here – let’s protect what is sacred”, shows te mana o te moana’s actions and presents sea turtles in French Polynesia.

Considering the differences of age and level in each class, Elodie adapted her speech and activities in each case, using games and quizzes for the youngest, and a more scientific approach for elder students.

Very concerned by environmental problems, the students showed much interest in te mana o te moana’s actions. Some said they may even become volunteer!

2010, January 19th – IUCN Congress of overseas territories https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/congress-of-overseas-territories-2010-january-19th/ Tue, 19 Jan 2010 22:08:50 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.com/?p=3364 Further to an adopted recommending hold during the World Congress of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) in 2004, The French Commitee of the IUCN created a work group for Overseas territories.
Both, Te mana o te moana foundation and Te Honu Tea have presented an assessment of sea turtles conservation actions plan in French Polynesia.

The overseas entities group wants to contribute to the building of the necessary bridges between climate change and biodiversity issues in ORs, OCTs and islands in general. Island people, cultures and economies are severely threatened by the combined effects of climate change and the loss of biodiversity and ecosystem services. In order to strengthen their efforts in addressing these threats, islands should value their political, economic and cultural links with the European Union.

This will reinforce their solidarity and cooperation, as well as maximize the potential for islands to become role models in sustainable development.
The goal of the workgroup is to find strategies to counter Climate Change and Biodiversity Loss.
