News from Okely, the green sea turtle welcomed following a head speargun injury https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/news-from-okely-the-green-sea-turtle-welcomed-following-a-head-speargun-injury/ Wed, 29 May 2019 19:50:21 +0000 https://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=16796

Many of you are asking for news from Okely, the green sea turtle welcomed to the Care center* last month following a speargun injury to the head. Thank you for your kind attention.

After regular sessions in the resting pool, Okely is able to swim but is not able to float properly: its buoyancy is impaired. It turns unwittingly on the carapace and needs help to turn around. Okely can thus not be left alone in the water without close supervision.

Okely also needs help with feeding and hydration. It is fed a mixture of fishes, squids, vitamins and water.

We are doing everything in our power for its recovery, but a positive outcome is not guaranteed…

We will make sure to keep you informed. Thank you to all of you for your support!

On World Turtle Day, Te mana o te moana opens its door to the public https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/on-world-turtle-day-te-mana-o-te-moana-opens-its-door-to-the-public/ Fri, 24 May 2019 00:50:47 +0000 https://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=16784

On the occasion of the 2019 World Turtle Day, Te mana o te moana organized a special event at the Sea turtle care center in Moorea.

A stand with informative documents, educational games and diverse information was installed on the beach and a detailed presentation on the resident sea turtles and on the threats they currently face locally and worldwide was made.

Throughout the day, over a 100 persons came to meet us in addition to the school children welcomed on this special day for our educational programs.

Sea turtles worldwide currently face several threats: plastic pollution, accidental fishing, degradation and loss of their habitats and nesting areas, global warming, poaching, etc.

We must implement concrete actions immediately to preserve this species: limit plastic consumption,  sort waste, advocate for better control of intensive fishing and for the preservation of littorals, reduce carbon footprint, etc.

Find out more about the threats sea turtles face here.

Te mana o te moana collaborates with the Oceanographic Institute https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/te-mana-o-te-moana-collaborates-with-the-oceanographic-institute/ Fri, 17 May 2019 03:44:19 +0000 https://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=16690

We are very pleased to inform you of Te mana o te moana’s collaboration with the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco in the context of its new Turtle Space and « The Turtle Odyssey », a temporary exhibition that opened on April 27th.

The material presented on the Care center as well as the presentations and learning paths offered to families on sea turtles highlight the work of our association and “creates in many visitors a desire to quickly change behaviors and consumption habits to achieve a lesser impact on these animals and on nature in general” says Didier Théron, Head of the Animations and Education Department at the Oceanographic Institute.

The goal of the Oceanographic Museum is to educate the general public on the protection of the ocean, its fauna and flora.

The Oceanographic Museum and Institute are part of the Albert I Foundation, Prince of Monaco, which objective is to raise awareness on the richness and fragility of the oceans and promote sustainable management and a reasoned and effective protection of the latter.

Many thanks to the Oceanographic Institute for its trust and commitment to protecting our oceans.

Thanks to the support of Jean-François Clervoy and Frank Lehot, Te mana o te moana just published a collection of productions made by students during the educational workshops, competitions and events organized by the association for the past 10 years. 500 works of art are presented in this booklet!

Jean-François, an astronaut with 3 space missions and Frank Lehot, an emergency medicine doctor specializing in space medicine, have been financially supporting Te manao te moana by providing the association 100% of the profits of their book’s sales: ‘History of space conquest’ (the 3rd edition will be released shortly).
Both very attached to the protection of the blue planet, they are involved in various actions for the preservation of the oceans and of nature.

A big thank you to them!

Signature of a new Convention for the Project ‘Educative Marine Area’ (AME) https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/signature-of-a-new-convention-for-the-project-educative-marine-area-ame/ Mon, 18 Mar 2019 19:11:42 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=16172 On Wednesday 13 March 2019, Te mana o te moana and the Direction of Education & Teaching of French Polynesia (DGEE) signed a partnership agreement as part of the Educative Marine Area (AME) Project for the organization of workshops and eco-friendly activities for Polynesian schoolchildren.

As a reminder, AME is a small coastal area managed in a participatory manner by students. It allows teachers to educate children on the protection of the marine environment and its biodiversity but also to use the AME as a teaching tool: mathematical concepts by counting marine species, notions of French by learning marine vocabulary, etc.

The idea is to learn, live and transmit the ocean!

Earlier in March, Magali Lagant, our educational program coordinator travelled to Anaa, Tuamotus as part of the AME project. Anaa’s AME stretches over 2km of coastline and is managed by the local school under the supervision of Jean-Pierre.

Throughout the week, Magali led educational workshops on the beach and in class to raise awareness on the marine environment, particularly on the themes of marine protected areas, coral reef and more generally the protection of the environment. The school of Tahiti Mairipehe supervised by Ms. Eileen which is AME-certified, also benefited from awareness sessions, having made the trip to Anaa to exchange with the local school on AME.

Polynesia has 26 AME and since 2012, 1,700 children have participated in the dedicated workshops organized by our association.

Awareness tour in the Australes, with Pew Polynesia support https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/awareness-tour-in-the-australes-with-pew-polynesia-support/ Fri, 01 Dec 2017 18:31:47 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=12811 Since last week, the school awareness tour in the Australes has continued in Tubuai and in Rimatara. Indeed, thanks to the support of Pew Polynesia, our animators travel the southern islands to explain to school the different marine environment management plans (PGEM, AMP, ZPR, Rahui, etc.) and the benefit of setting up collective initiatives like a ” Rahui Tamari ” or a request for the label” AME ” (Marine educational area).
For two weeks, students from the islands of Rimatara and Rurutu received Magali in one morning for an information session followed by a session on site where children accompanied by their teachers were able to choose a marine area for the study of its environment. It is, among other things, the Reef Check method that they discovered through the counting of certain species of fish (e.g. Butterfly Fish etc), invertebrates (e.g.: Sea Urchins, hava ‘ e, clams) and types Corals (massive etc) while learning to recognize episodes of coral bleaching.
In Total, more than 100 pupils have been sensitized to the protection of the marine environment.
