An opportunity to take stock of waste production and recycling.

Worldwide, it is estimated that more than 2.5 billion tons of waste are produced annually. In Polynesia, 52,000 tons of waste are produced per year in the Windward Islands.

Among this waste, we mainly find household waste, business waste and waste from the construction sector, the biggest polluter in the world.

On our islands, green bins enable the collection of recyclable waste. Cans, bottles, paper, these wastes are then exported to be recycled in other countries. Only glass is recycled in Polynesia thanks to the network of communal glass bins in Tahiti and Moorea. Very finely crushed glass can then replace gravels used for concrete slabs, wall drainage and filtration basins.

Sorting and recycling waste is an important part of environmental protection. It reduces pollution and preserves natural resources by reusing resources that have already been consumed. Recycling paper allows, for example, to preserve wood resources and therefore our forests. Recycling plastic also helps preserve oil resources and limits pollution related to oil extraction.

All together, let’s continue our recycling efforts and preserve our fenua!

Te mana o te moana actions on Tetiaroa https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/te-mana-o-te-moana-actions-on-tetiaroa/ Sat, 05 Mar 2022 00:54:03 +0000 https://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=21931

Let’s take a look on the actions of Te mana o te moana on Tetiaroa

Since 2007 and thanks to the authorization and support of the Direction de l’Environnement Polynésie Française, a study has been carried out on the atoll on green sea turtle nesting sites.

Our teams on site from October to April monitor the atoll to identify laying females, inventory nests and protect hatchlings.

2022 One Ocean Summit https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/2022-one-ocean-summit/ Sun, 13 Feb 2022 01:18:35 +0000 https://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=21831

From February 9th to 11th, 2022, the 𝗢𝗻𝗲 𝗢𝗰𝗲𝗮𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁 has been taking place in Brest. An event at the French initiative with the objective “to translate into concrete actions our shared responsibility on the Ocean”.

In this context, our founder, Dr. Cécile Gaspar, was asked to join the event, to discuss issues related to marine biodiversity and to participate in a workshop on ocean global education and youth commitment.

Surrounded by Maud Fontenoy, ambassador of our foundation, Philippe Vallette, Francis Vallat and Jacques Rougerie, members of our Board of directors, these 3 intense days highlighted the urgency of preserving our marine environment.

Four commitments were officially made for French Polynesia during this summit:

– The multiplication of biosphere reserves on a 7,000 km2 maritime surface
– Coastal zoning for the benefit of artisanal and subsistence fishing over an area of 500,000 km2
– The protection of corals and the protection of mandatory mooring areas
– The launch of Rahui Nui, a marine protected area of approximately 500,000 km2

Several good news for the Polynesian marine environment!

Many thanks to Air Tahiti Nui for making this travel possible and to the Pacific Beachcomber Group for its constant support.

In this month of January 2022, we had the pleasure of welcoming 2 groups of around twenty people in Tahiti and Moorea, who came to participate in a training course organized by Te mana o te moana.

Dedicated to holiday and leisure centers, camps and foundations, this training allowed the creation of educational activities around the material recycling, bringing together everyone’s ideas.

During this training, a global environmental assessment and more specifically in French Polynesia was first carried out, then subjects such as sustainable development and eco-responsible actions were discussed.

The workshops around the themes “𝙂𝙞𝙫𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙗𝙟𝙚𝙘𝙩𝙨 𝙖 𝙨𝙚𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙙 𝙡𝙞𝙛𝙚” and “𝙍𝙚𝙥𝙖𝙞𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙣𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙖𝙙 𝙤𝙛 𝙧𝙚𝙥𝙡𝙖𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙜” were animated by Mooz Réparette for the delight of the participants.

Combining theory and practice, the objective of this training is to find daily solutions to have a limited impact on the environment.

Since last week, we have been welcoming participants from Moorea and Tahiti to our training “𝗙𝗔’𝗔 𝗔𝗣𝗜 𝗥𝗔: let’s learn to reuse”.

During this training, we take stock of the environmental situation in the world and in French Polynesia and tackle subjects such as sustainable development and the implementation of eco-friendly habits.

Practical workshops are run by Mooz Reparette during which participants learn how to give a second life to used objects and how to repair instead of replacing. Combining theory and practice, the  training objective is to find daily solutions to have a limited impact on the environment.

Other sessions are planned in the coming weeks.

We will make sure to keep you informed!
