The HEI ONE Project is launched on Earth Day 2022 https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/the-hei-one-project-is-launched-on-earth-day-2022/ Fri, 22 Apr 2022 23:19:39 +0000 https://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=22109

On the occasion of Earth Day celebrated every year on April 22nd, Te mana o te moana announces the launch of the 𝐇𝐄𝐈 𝐎𝐍𝐄 “The sand crown” project. This project aims to better understand the mechanism of erosion following the results of the Tetiaroa atoll study and to raise awareness on the damages related to the overexploitation of sand

On a global scale, the erosion of sand coastlines affects a third of the planet’s coastlines and half of the world’s beaches are threatened with disappearance by 2100.
At the same time, the demand for sand has increased over the past 30 years by 360% and we are currently extracting more sand than the Earth is able to produce. Indeed, hundreds of thousands of years are needed to produce sand (between 200 years and 1,000 years to form 1cm of sand).
In January 2021, teams from Te mana o te moana in Tetiaroa carried out a study on the erosion of the main beaches identified as green sea turtle nesting sites.
The results show a considerable increase in steep slopes, considered impassable by female turtles, particularly on Honuea and Onetahi motu, with respectively 28% and 13% of the beaches becoming inaccessible to females.
Although the total area of beaches seems to have increased in the last 5 years on Tetiaroa, the newly created beaches have low altitudes, barely higher than sea level, and are therefore very easily flooded causing green sea turtle nests losses.

The 𝐇𝐄𝐈 𝐎𝐍𝐄 project focuses on the issue of erosion and sand and will include several conservation and education actions:
〰 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 on the results of the erosion study carried out on Tetiaroa
〰 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗲 the population on the damages of erosion and sand overexploitation
〰 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗲 a public conference open to all on erosion and sand shortage
〰 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 and lead educational programs on erosion and sand issues in schools
We will keep you informed and share with you key information on this issue affecting our beloved Earth. 🙏🏼

Let’s act now to protect the Earth!

Participation to the World Conservation Congress https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/participation-to-the-world-conservation-congress/ Fri, 10 Sep 2021 21:41:56 +0000 https://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=21161

Since September 3rd 2021, the World Conservation Congress of the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has been taking place in Marseille. The objective is to set priorities and drive conservation and sustainable development action priorities on a planetary scale.

Te mana o te moana, IUCN member and sole Polynesian institution with a voting power actively participates in the Congress, both to the Assemblies, the Forum and the Exhibition.

✔ In particular, the association runs the “Protect Your Beach” sand stand alongside IUCN to raise awareness on sand global shortage and overexploitation.

Present on the stand, Jean-Francois Clervoy, astronaut and sponsor of our association also hosted a “From space to species” conference to convey loud and clear the message of the urgency to protect planet Earth and human beings who inhabit it.

Jean-François has supported our foundation for many years and in particular with his book “The space conquest” for which he donates the profits to Te mana o te moana.

The Congress continues until September 11st with Dr. Cécile Gaspar, our founder and Fred Lavail, volunteer of Te mana o te moana. Many discussions, events and exchanges are scheduled, which we hope will allow to define guidelines for concrete actions in favor of the protection of the planet.

Nautilus is brought by boat from Tahaa to the Care center https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/nautilus-is-brought-by-boat-from-tahaa-to-the-care-center/ Mon, 27 Jul 2020 01:05:14 +0000 https://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=19548

We recently welcomed at the Care center a green turtle found weakened, floating and dehydrated in Tahaa by a young man Frederik Hovmøller Knudsen who was sailing around the island. After navigating to Moorea to bring us the turtle, it was taken care of by our teams.

Named Nautilus, the name of the boat, this 41cm and 4.250kg turtle is in critical condition. Its extreme thinness associated with limited reflexes does not allow us to comment on its recovery for now.

We would like to thank Frederik, the Direction of the Environment of French Polynesia as well as the nautical brigade of Moorea and Moïse Ruta from Papetoai quay who allowed the boat to dock at night to give us the turtle.

A surge of solidarity which we hope will bear fruit.

A successful 2020 World Oceans Day https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/a-successful-2020-world-oceans-day/ Tue, 09 Jun 2020 21:13:46 +0000 https://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=19230

A great mobilization for the GIANT WASTE CLEANUP DAY organized in Moorea as part of World Oceans Day. More than 100 people participated in the various cleanups with several tons of collected waste. A strong signal for an immediate change of behaviors!

On our islands, 80% of terrestrial waste ends up in the ocean. Marine species are the first ones to be impacted by this pollution with an estimate of nearly 1 million marine animals dead each year due to plastic pollution.

THROW YOUR WASTE IN GARBAGES AND LIMIT YOUR USE OF PLASTIC!

Thank you to all the volunteers, associations and the population who participated in this cleanup!
