The actions in education conservation and research on marine environment conducted since 2004 by our association and particulary on marine turtles, marine mammals and coral reefs were placed at the honor!! … This launch was also the opportunity to present the creation of the French World Ocean Network association  for which, just like for the international Association, the Président and Phd Cécile Gaspar is a founding member and member of office.

It was the opportunity for Cécile Gaspar, President, to promote the actions of the foundation and to encounter some famous and honorous personns such as the Prince Albert 2 de Monaco (involved in conservation of the oceans through his Fondation Prince Albert 2 de Monaco), James Cameron (which continues to push the boundaries of underwater exploration and filmmaking) or Sylvia Earle (the most recognized person into the world ocean protection, founder of  Mission Blue).

2010, June 8th – World Ocean Day on Moorea https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/2010-june-8th-world-ocean-day-on-moorea/ Tue, 08 Jun 2010 23:00:15 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.com/?p=3854 In partnership with the city hall of Moorea, they organized it on Tahiamanu beach called Mareto. All the 7 schools, more than 450 children of the island were welcomed thanks to the Ministry of primary school.


A special day dedicated to Oceans, Biodiversity, celebrating by the way the anniversary of Captain Cousteau by wearing a local red watch cap made with “locals pareo”.

At least, 10 stands animated by educators, scientists, institutes, scuba diving centres and non-profit foundation, gathered all together to celebrate this huge event. From 8.am to 4.00pm, children have visited various pedagogic activities thanks to the Progem, Berkeley Institute, The Criobe scientist center, the Moorea Dolphin Center company…

 

More than that, Matthieu, the marine biologist of Te mana o te moana proposed an underwater trail for school children for a better understanding of animals living into oceans.

 

At the same time, the scuba diving center named “Bathy’s club” has made an ocean clean up to show to the kids some example of pollution….

To leave a mark of this special day, all children welcomed have decorated a special art work made with recycle rubbishes, parts of tissue, sand and all natural materials found on land. The thematic of this art was Biodiversity in the middle of the oceans, a fragile richness to be preserved.

A classroom of Papetoai’s school has also made a beautiful poem celebrating oceans, Biodiversity and the importance of preserving our nature and all living animals.

 

 

A special day celebrating Oceans which has gathered more than 450 children of the Island of Moorea. 7/7 of Moorea’s schools – 14 classes of Primary school – 1 class of College and 3 classes from the island of Tahaa. Another success for the preservation of our Biodiversity for the next generations.

To welcome him, the school children were wearing a red watch cap to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the renamed scientist Jacques-Yves Cousteau, who made indelible impression of the importance of protecting our planet and its oceans. More than that, they welcomed  J M Cousteau with a special Tahitian song named “te miti” (the sea). It was the opportunity for them to encounter a famous defender of the Oceans, who has travelled all around the world…

Jean Michel Cousteau has shown them pollution and all damages on marine life including also birds, explaining them why we have to protect the Blue Planet for themselves and the next generations.

At the end of the morning, each child was happy to receive a “Citizen of the Ocean” passport, swearing that they will protect their islands, their oceans forever. Jean Michel Cousteau was off to new countries again entrusting by this collective awakening of the school children.

 

Did you know?? Captain Cousteau’s red watch cap symbolizes his success as a personality that paved the way for generations to care about oceans.

It was also the opportunity to meet other people from everywhere to exchange information and various tools like the honu toolkit based on sea turtles which have been distributed. All participants where really enthusiastic.

She was help by the two godfathers of the association : Jean François Clervoy, astronaut for ESA and Jean Michel Cousteau, President of Ocean futures Society.
It was the opportunity for every participant to show the World Ocean Network identifying ambassadors to send a message through some artists, famous people and symbols in common to make a better visibility.
Jean Michel Cousteau and Philippe Vallette did express their wish for every participant to wear the famous woolly red hat from Cousteau Commandant on June 8th and on the 10th (brithday of JYC). Invited by the World Ocean Network, te mana o te moana was present at the world climate conference at Copenhaguen, Denmark, in December 2009.

Te mana o te moana non profit foundation was the only polynesian structure attending the COP 15 conference, in spite of a special concern for the polynesian islands, many of which are directly threatened by the sea level’s rise due to global warming.

Te mana o te moana was represented by Dr. Cécile Gaspar, who presented te mana o te moana’s actions and who met with some european leaders.

Also present was Jean-Michel Cousteau, Patron of te mana o te moana.
