Let’s celebrate the Endangered species day… https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/lets-celebrate-the-endangered-species-day/ Wed, 15 Jun 2016 01:06:55 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=11220 BD groupe sentierOn May 20th, we celebrated the Endangered species day in providing a special  educational program for the teenagers of the Collège La Mennais school. Endangered Species Day is an opportunity for people of all ages to learn about the importance of protecting  endangered species and everyday actions they can take to help protect them. Started in 2006 by the United States Congress, Endangered Species   Day is a celebration of the nation’s wildlife and wild places. Every year on the third Friday in May (and throughout the month), zoos, aquariums, parks, botanic gardens, wildlife refuges, museums, schools, community centers, conservation groups and other organizations throughout the country hold   tours, special speaker presentations, exhibits, children’s activities and more to celebrate Endangered Species Day.Accompanied with Magali, they first get information about corals, reefs and its fauna and flora. Then, children divided in groups of 8 discovered the underwater of Moorea, learning about the species of fish from French Polynesia, their names in both French and Tahitian…GROUPE fin

The end of the program was dedicated to the preservation of the marine mammals, the necessity of respecting the Sanctuary held in 2002 and to the visit of the Sea Turtle Clinic, learning the rules applied and the giving them information about the species, their life cycle, etc… Before they leave, each teen has got either a booklet “Tohora, baleine à bosse, qui es-tu?” or a “Sea turtles from French Polynesia” one’s.

Let’s celebrate the Year of the Whale …. https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/lets-celebrate-the-year-of-the-whale/ Fri, 22 Apr 2016 22:16:26 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=11118 YOTW-Fr-colThe Pacific Island region is home to over half the world’s species of cetaceans, whales and dolphins, including some of the least known, and as such members of the Secretariat of the Pacific Environment Programme (SPREP) agreed to focus their activities in 2016 and 2017 on a targeted regional campaign on whales.

The ‘Protect Pacific Whales – Ocean Voyagers’ Campaign provides an opportunity for SPREP and all its Members and partners to celebrate these magnificent creatures, raise awareness on whale conservation as well as ocean conservation. What happens in the ocean will inevitably impact whales.  The campaign will also address the problems Whales face as ocean-dwellers as this will ultimately impact all people.sprep-proe

The programme of work that is envisaged for the Protect Pacific Whales Campaign is an ambitious combination of scientific research, training and capacity-building, exchange of information, and cultural and artistic celebration.

Join us to celebrate whales and their place in Pacific cultures!  Together we can work towards promoting their protection in the face of emerging threats and support measures to enhance their conservation.  We can all aim to maximise the economic return available to Pacific island communities from the development and application of best-practice guidelines for whale-watching.

For more information, visit our website (English and French versions available) https://www.sprep.org/yearofthewhale and contact the Sprep at pacificwhales@sprep.org.
