Yesterday, on June 8th, we had the pleasure of welcoming the CE2 class from Mairipehe school in Mataiea, winner of the HEI HONU competition.

Drawing workshop with Jose Marquez, educational activity, presentation on sea turtles, tactile activity or even a concert with Veroarii punctuated this recreational morning to children’s delight.

At the same time, 2 volunteers from the foundation conducted an awareness session aboard the Aremiti Tahiti – Moorea with many students from Tahiti.

Discover the images of rats’ predation on baby green sea turtles on Tetiaroa https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/discover-the-images-of-rats-predation-on-baby-green-sea-turtles-on-tetiaroa/ Fri, 01 Mar 2019 20:21:13 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=16059 Rats, an invasive species, exert an important predation on baby green sea turtles on Tetiaroa atoll. Rats are able to feel the imminent hatching of a nest and extract the baby turtles from the sand, as you can see in the video below! This video was filmed thanks to an infrared camera installed next to the nest.

The conclusion is simple: the baby turtles represent a familiar source of food for the rats.

We need your support. Help us understand rats’ predation to better protect the green sea turtles on Tetiaroa atoll! Support our actions by making a donation or buying items in our shop.

*** Together, we will go further for the protection of our sea turtles ***

News from Matapo, a blind hawksbill sea turtle, resident of the Sea turtle care center https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/news-from-matapo-a-blind-hawksbill-sea-turtle-resident-of-the-sea-turtle-care-center/ Thu, 28 Feb 2019 21:04:27 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=16075 Matapo, a blind hawksbill sea turtle following a speargun injury, is a resident of the Sea turtle care center since May 2009. Due to her handicap, she is fed squids, fishes and algae with a clamp. The lagoon’s natural water allows our resident turtles to face the competition of small fishes for their food, like they would in the wild.

Aside from her impairment, Matapo is doing great.

Enjoy your squid Matapo!

Record emergence of green sea turtles in Tetiaroa https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/record-emergence-of-green-sea-turtles-in-tetiaroa/ Wed, 20 Feb 2019 20:22:18 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=15981 A record nesting emergence of 131 healthy baby green sea turtles from the same nest on the motu Onetahi, where The Brando hotel is located. The 3-year cycle observed by our teams is confirmed: a high year in terms of laying followed by an average year and a low year.
We wish these baby turtles a long life and look forward to more hatchings next year on this motu!

Discover the method used by Te mana o te moana for coral cuttings https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/discover-the-method-used-by-te-mana-o-te-moana-for-coral-cuttings/ Fri, 15 Feb 2019 20:35:05 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=15988

The bad weather does not stop the teams of Te mana o te moana. Coral cutting work for the maintenance of the underwater trail continues. The goal of coral cuttings is to recover broken fragments before they are covered in sand and thus die.

The method used is inspired by the method of Tamarii pointe des pêcheurs: a pencil sea urchin spine serves as a support and the coral fragment is attached to it by a linen twine and a wire. This method takes more time than other widely used methods but has a neutral impact on the environment thanks to the use of non-harmful materials.

The cutting, once installed, will absorbe the pencil sea urchin spine in its skeleton and when at the right size, will be implanted on dead corals used as a support.
Depending on the species, the cuttings will take between 1 and 3 months to grow.

Coral cuttings can be performed by anybody, it does not require any tool or special material. Try and share with us your experiences!

Meet Tetuanui, our technician https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/meet-tetuanui-our-technician/ Wed, 06 Feb 2019 23:27:12 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=15748

For nearly 8 months, Tetuanui Teahui, technician at the Sea turtle care center has taken care of our residents. She provides care, feeds, weights and measures them on a daily basis. The turtles of the association have no secrets for her! She also runs educational programs for young audiences and makes presentations on the Care center.

Through her work at Te mana o te moana, Tetuanui has discovered a real passion for marine turtles and also for coral reefs. Thank you to Tetuanui for her work and dedication!

Study on the effect of climate change on sea turtles in Tetiaroa https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/study-on-the-effect-of-climate-change-on-sea-turtles-in-tetiaroa/ Tue, 05 Feb 2019 23:00:33 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=15731

For 2 months, Te mana o te moana’s team in Tetiaroa had the pleasure of working alongside Dr. Jonathan Monsinjon, a scientist specializing on the effects of climate change on sea turtles. He has helped our teams on the ground to analyze the results of the data collected since 2011 on the temperature of the nests during the incubation period recorded thanks to the installation of thermologgers. His assistance in highlighting the research work carried out for more than 11 years by the association has also been very beneficial.

Present during the « nesting peak », Jonathan also participated in the identification of nesting females and in the protection of hatchlings.
A big thank you to Jonathan for his investment!.
