For 8 years now, Te mana o te moana counts IFBD (Institute for Business Development), a company based in Bruges, Belgium, as one of its key supporters

Anne and Dirk, directors of the company, both regular volunteers during their visits to Polynesia, initially provided financial support for the sea turtle rehabilitation Center. This important support has enabled the Center to develop and broaden its scope of action.

Since 2023, IFBD has supported the actions carried out by Te mana o te maona’s teams on Tetiaroa, particularly in terms of the green turtle scientific monitoring on the atoll. IFBD also financed the “Turtle container”, a new space enabling the teams to work more efficiently.

We would like to thank IFBD and Anne and Dirk for their constant support, their enthusiasm on every visit as well as their kindness.

Mauruuru from the bottom of our hearts!

Created by Dr. Sylvia Earle, founding oceanographer and explorer, this foundation works for oceans exploration and protection. Mission Blue Hope Spots are extraordinary places that have been scientifically identified as critical to the oceans health.

Tetiaroa atoll was elected Hope Spot in 2019. A sanctuary for nesting green sea turtles and many sea birds species, the atoll is exposed to many risks due to the negative impact of climate change and the misuse of resources.

The research and conservation programs implemented on the atoll by Te mana o te moana and Tetiaroa Society include sea turtles protection, coral reefs restoration, shark ecology, archaeology, traditional fishing management and ocean acidification modeling.

Discover in a few pictures the beauty of this atoll and the actions implemented!

Dr. Cécile Gaspar, Founder & Executive Director of Te mana o te moana

We are very pleased to announce the granting of the Mission Blue « Hope Spot » for Tetiaroa atoll in partnership with Tetiaroa Society!

Created by legendary oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle, the Mission Blue Foundation’s mission is to implement actions to explore and protect the oceans. The « Hope Spot » label brings the spotlight on protected areas that demonstrate a sustainable approach and contribute to the protection of the marine and terrestrial environment. This label will allow Tetiaroa atoll to draw attention on its sustainable development programs but also inform the general public around the planet on the need to protect this precious ecosystem. Tetiaroa atoll hosts an important number of green sea turtle nesting sites and is called homes to numerous nesting sea birds. The « Hope Spot » network currently counts over 100 protected areas worldwide.

Quentin Genet, Marine biologist at Te mana o te moana

Since 2007, Te mana o te moana has been working on Tetiaroa atoll as part of its Research Program on green sea turtle nesting sites. Led by Quentin Genet and Margaux Touron, marine biologists of the association and supervised by Dr. Cécile Gaspar, our veterinarian and doctor in marine biology, this project is one of the most important one conducted on the atoll with more than 1,500 nests identified and protected (equivalent to about 150 000 emerging turtles). This Scientific Program includes the monitoring of nesting sites, the collection of information on nesting females and hatchings, the protection of hatchlings when necessary, and the gathering of data on the effects of climate change and the impact of predation.

Dr. Sylvia Earle, Founder and President of Mission Blue and Dr. Cécile Gaspar

Dr. Cécile Gaspar, Hope Spot Champion, Founder and Executive Director of Te mana o te moana explains: “I met Sylvia Earle over 20 years ago. Since that day, her words have strengthened my conviction for immediate action towards protecting our oceans. Sea turtles are iconic marine species on the front line of climate change threats. Te mana o te moana’s Green Sea Turtle Sanctuary on Tetiaroa atoll has been an outstanding success. We are working to fulfill and grow Marlon Brando’s vision for a new conservation model where tourists, communities, teachers, students and researchers all play an important role in protecting our natural resources.”

Many thanks to Mission Blue!

Te mana o te moana collaborates with the Oceanographic Institute https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/te-mana-o-te-moana-collaborates-with-the-oceanographic-institute/ Fri, 17 May 2019 03:44:19 +0000 https://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=16690

We are very pleased to inform you of Te mana o te moana’s collaboration with the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco in the context of its new Turtle Space and « The Turtle Odyssey », a temporary exhibition that opened on April 27th.

The material presented on the Care center as well as the presentations and learning paths offered to families on sea turtles highlight the work of our association and “creates in many visitors a desire to quickly change behaviors and consumption habits to achieve a lesser impact on these animals and on nature in general” says Didier Théron, Head of the Animations and Education Department at the Oceanographic Institute.

The goal of the Oceanographic Museum is to educate the general public on the protection of the ocean, its fauna and flora.

The Oceanographic Museum and Institute are part of the Albert I Foundation, Prince of Monaco, which objective is to raise awareness on the richness and fragility of the oceans and promote sustainable management and a reasoned and effective protection of the latter.

Many thanks to the Oceanographic Institute for its trust and commitment to protecting our oceans.
