Indeed, the beaches are exposed to increasing urbanization, high swells and erosion causing a decrease in nesting surface for sea turtles.

Last week, Dr Cécile Gaspar, our Founder and Director of Strategy, visited Réunion Island to discuss the protocols implemented since 1999 by CEDTM and Kelonia on a similar project. The latter consists of rehabilitating beaches to help sea turtles lay their eggs on Reunion Island.

Many thanks to the teams at CEDTM – Centre d’Etude et de Découverte des Tortues Marines and Kelonia for sharing their knowledge and contributing to this project!

Partners of the project : IUCN French Committee, Te Ora Naho – FAPE, Tahitian Historical Society and La Délégation de la Polynésie française à la Recherche.

Project : The ills of the sea https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/project-the-ills-of-the-sea/ Tue, 27 Aug 2024 19:21:00 +0000 https://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=26470 Recently, we welcomed the Mata ‘avei’a association as part of their call for projects “The words / ills of the sea”.

This project in which we welcome artists aims to use art to raise public awareness of scientific knowledge and the issues involved in preserving the marine environment.

The program includes :

  • sharing knowledge,
  • meeting our residents,
  • and feeding our baby turtles

A big thank you to these 3 artists who came to discover the work of our association to get inspired…and perhaps produce a work in connection with sea turtles !

NEW PROJECT “Fa’atura te tahatai” https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/new-project-faatura-te-tahatai/ Wed, 07 Aug 2024 22:23:25 +0000 https://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=26416 The beaches of French Polynesia are exposed to :

  • increasing urbanization
  • heavy swells
  • and ever-greater erosion
resulting in a reduction in nesting areas for sea turtles.

To reduce this phenomenon, Te mana o te moana teams are taking part in the FA’ATURA TE TAHATAI PROJECT which aims to carry out ecological restoration operations to revegetate certain heavily impacted sites.

On Tetiaroa atoll, our teams are beginning to identify areas where native plant species can be harvested, which will then be placed in nurseries to grow before being replanted on the beaches of interest.

A nature-based solution to encourage sea turtle nesting and limit shoreline erosion.
