They also exchanged with local schools on a website specially dedicated to them by the French Polynesian Head of Education.

To complete their project, the students of  Sahorre have created a special boardgame on the Sea turtles thematic called : the”TORSAHOPOLY” (the TOR for TORtue (turtle), the SAHO for SAHOrre and POLY for POLYnesia). It’s a quizz on Mahina Rahi, one of the 6 green turtles  equipped by satellite transmitter on the island of Tetiaroa in January 2015. To highlight the project, 3 children went in May to the ARGONAUTICA meeting in Montpellier and have won the prize for the best presentation !!!!! One more time, huge congratulations to the school children of Sahorre and their teacher !!

Native from Rangiroa where she was founded injured by spire gun, Tereori was  immediately brought back to the Clinic thanks to Air Tahiti company, and released after many months of cares by the President of the French Polynesia, Mr Edouard Fritch. At her release, Tereori went straight away to the North. She has now travelled 1 600 km and overtaken the Tuamotu archipelagos. She is now at 600 kilometers Ouest from the Marquesas Islands… How far will she go to? You will know it in following our news.

2 of our educators in New Caledonia with children of Moorea…. https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/2-of-our-educators-in-new-caledonia-with-children-of-moorea/ Sat, 09 May 2015 23:16:50 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=10113 DSC00676To conclude the educational project held as part of the Observatory for the sea turtles and the marine mammals in French Polynesia, Magali and Charlotte, 2 of our educators has just left Tahiti on Thursday 7th to accompany the classeroom of Mrs Caroline (CM2 Paopao elementary school) selected from Moorea to travel over to New Caledonia for one week. In fact, the travel will end the huge educational project called “Bula honu” after one school-year of hard work. In total, more than 6 classerooms have exchanged on the sea turtles through their follow-up, 6 of them having been tagged in French Polynesia during the past months. Children are now in New Caledonia to encouter other actors of the marine species if the Pacific Ocean and to discover other classerooms and aquariums they have exchanged for a while. This education, research and conservation project is as part of the Observatory for cetacean and sea turtles held in 2011 in French Polynesia. That’s how this project « BULA HONU, follow the sea turtles of the Pacific » was born thanks to the support of the Nature et Découvertes Foundation, the Total Foundation, the Biome Entity, the Gauguin Cruises, the Moorea Dolphin Center, the CNES, the Maud Fontenoy Foundation, the Brando hotel, the Fonds Pacifique, the Ifrecor Polynesia, the Board of Education, the General Direction of Education and Teachings (DGEE), research centers and partners of the Pacific.

web Intervention TikehauDifferents school classes of Tahiti, Moorea, Tuamotu but also from France, Tonga, Samoa, Fijii, New Caledonia and others countries of the South Pacific are exchanging and following the travel of six sea turtles equippeed by staellite transmitters. Children discover all together the great journey of the French polynesia sea turtles.

After exchanging during the all school year on the marine embmematic species we need to proect, through a website (in both French and English) dedicated to the project, a classroom from Moorea will travel over to New Caledonia in May 2015 to encounter the schools they exchanged with during the year. web TUHERAHERA 30mars

For now, we are pleased to introduce you the 6 sea turtles, equipped by satellite transmitters between December 2014 and March 2015 on the islands of Tikehau, Hao, Tetiaroa and Moorea, in clicking on the following link : Bula honu.

This project is held thanks to the Ministry of the Environment, In fact, the website dedicated for the project has been realized by the Board of Education of French Polynesia and approved by the in French Polynesia.

Tereori released by the President of French Polynesia… https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/tereori-released-by-the-president-of-french-polynesia/ Sat, 04 Apr 2015 20:37:42 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=9972 DSC_0185 To celebrate the Earth day and the Sea turtles day, we welcomed the President of French Polynesia, Mr Edouard Fritch on Saturday 28th of March 2015, invited to release “Tereori” (Titi), a green turtle of the Sea Turtle Clinic ready to go back to the ocean.DSC_0170

Titi, renamed “Tereori” by the President is the 183rd sea turtle released after having had veterinary cares at the Clinic since July 2014, authorized by Ministerial decree from the Direction of the Environment.
At her arrival, Tereori was very weakened (weighing 13 kilos) and with damages on her shell. She was found by tourists in Rangiroa, on the reef, in front of the airport.
Renamed on October 21st by the President, she was released on March 28th for the earth hour day hour, in great shape, weighing 24 pounds this time for a length of 60 cm. Thanks to the Maud Fontenoy Foundation, Tereori is equipped by a satellite transmitter in order to get more informations about the sea turtles migrations, their food areas, from French Polynesia.

This new edition is realized thanks to the Aquarium of La Rochelle and the Head Services for Education of French Polynesia. Though the “Bula Honu project”, children from Tahiti, Moorea, Fidji, New Caledonia, Cook, Tonga will exchange on sea turtles and receive one booklet each in French, Tahitian and English.

Ariti, the loggerhead turtle released on May 2013 (for those who are not already following her travel) is now in the North Pacific. She has continued northward and is now in the Marshall Islands in the vicinity of (but not within) Namu Atoll. This project is conducted thanks to the partnership with the NOAA entity and the Direction of the Environnement in French Polynesia.

Ariti, the loggerhead turtle rescued by a polynesian fisherman and released on May 2013, equipped by 2 satellite tags is giving her last postions. After having transmitted for 221 days and traveled 7,386 km, Ariti is presently well-above the equator heading northwest in the direction of the Caroline Islands, Federated States of Micronesia.

Remember that this project is conducted thanks to the NOAA Administration (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and in partnership with the Direction of the Environment of French Polynesia.

On December 1st, Ariti crossed the Equator just north of Nauru. She is currently in the North Pacific Ocean.  In total and at this time, Ariti shas travelled over 6,500 km during the 194 days since being released off Tahiti-iti!!!

Remind that this project is conducted thanks to the NOAA Administration (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) and in partnership with the Direction of the Environment of French Polynesia.
