  • increasing urbanization
  • heavy swells
  • and ever-greater erosion
resulting in a reduction in nesting areas for sea turtles.

To reduce this phenomenon, Te mana o te moana teams are taking part in the FA’ATURA TE TAHATAI PROJECT which aims to carry out ecological restoration operations to revegetate certain heavily impacted sites.

On Tetiaroa atoll, our teams are beginning to identify areas where native plant species can be harvested, which will then be placed in nurseries to grow before being replanted on the beaches of interest.

A nature-based solution to encourage sea turtle nesting and limit shoreline erosion.

A huge thank you to our volunteers present alongside us onsite.

Many thanks also to Te ora Naho – FAPE and Tu’aro Nui for making our participation possible

An Educational Marine Area or EMA is a coastal marine area managed in a participatory way by a school or a group of students. It’s an approach that involves students in a citizen action project to protect and manage the marine environment supported by the French Polynesia Ministry of Education and DGEE Polynesie, to which Te mana o te moana contributes every year.

Pupils of CE2 Tikehau and CE2 Rangiroa presented the knowledge acquired during their 4 visits at the association as part of their EMA project.

The program included a photo exhibition, oral presentations, booths and games.

Congratulations and mauru’uru roa to all the students and their teachers, Vaitea and Vahineterai !

Over 280 people from the 5 continents took part in the event, organized by Waves of Change and Ecolab, the open innovation laboratory of Ministere Ecologie Territoires.

Designed to foster innovation through cooperation, the Forum was dedicated to sharing knowledge, expertise and ideas on the theme of “Adaptation: coastal territories innovate”.

The presentations made and the different exchanges highlighted the sea turtle as a typical emblem of the issues explored at this Forum, mainly because of the fragility of the ecosystems in which they evolve.

We would like to sincerely thank Air Tahiti Nui for its support, and all the institutional and private partners who have supported Te mana o te moana since 2004.

Mauruuru roa !

Tetiaroa nesting season wrap-up https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/tetiaroa-nesting-season-wrap-up/ Thu, 11 Jul 2024 19:50:00 +0000 https://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=26309 An incredible green turtle nesting season !

Some key figures of the 2023-2024 nesting season in Tetiaroa:

  • More than 1,400 turtle ascents across the atoll
  • For 441 confirmed nests It’s a RECORD-BREAKING year in terms of tracks recorded!

After analyzing the nests, we estimate that 34,980 hatchlings were born on the atoll this year with a peak in December and January, like the previous seasons

During the night shifts :

  • 219 female observations have been recorded
  • Allowing the identification of 76 different individuals
  • Among which 13 have been observed during previous seasons.

One of them has been observed for the 3rd time this year in Tetiaroa!

A big thank you to all the partners supporting the nesting monitoring program led by Te mana o te moana every year on Tetiaroa.
