Heiani joined Te mana o te moana team under a Development contract for a period of one year.

Aged 21, she studied in the field of Communication and loves everything related to the protection of the environment and animals. She is very helpful in the field of communication and administration.

From Moorea, Heimen integrated our team under a volunteering service contract for the next 8 months. Aged 19 years old, he studied computer science and particularly love animals. Heimen came to Te mana o te moana when he was a kid and decided to join our foundation to participate in the safeguard of the environment and sea turtles.

Jehdia also joined our team in September for a period of 8 months. Originally from Moorea, Jehdia decided to take a commitment with the same people who made him dream as a child. Passionate about computers, he will help us in the administrative field as well as in the exchanges with the public while continuing his studies in parallel.

We are very glad to have them on our team!

Today, we are glad to introduce you to Orava Atiu.

Orava joined the association to lend us a hand in the coordination of the Sea turtle care center. A marine biologist from Moorea, Orava has experience with sea turtles. She was an intern in 2008 during her third year of university and since that date has remained an active volunteer within the Care center. ✨

An arts passionate, Orava particularly likes painting Polynesian biodiversity. Indeed, she produced a beautiful educational video on the threats faced by green sea turtles.

On Tetiaroa atoll, Te mana o te moana teams are carrying out a scientific study on green sea turtle nesting sites thanks to the authorization and the support of the Direction of the Environment of French Polynesia.

One of the aspect of the Study is to evaluate the impact of rats on emerging turtles. The objective is to better understand the consequences of this predation. Gaëlle, a Master II student on Oceanic Island Environment at the University of French Polynesia focuses on this theme. With her colleagues, she roams the beaches of the atoll at night to locate the nests and to install, approximately 50 days after spawning, infra-red cameras. These cameras allow to witness with certainty rats’ predation on hatchlings. The videos are then analyzed to identify the nests on which a predation has been confirmed, to define the rats species and analyze their behavior.

At the end of Gaëlle’s internship in June, we hope to be able to share with you relevant information on this study in collaboration with the Direction of the Environment.
