Conference on marine turtles by Jean-Baptiste https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/12843/ Wed, 13 Dec 2017 23:39:56 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=12843 With the support of Air Tahiti Nui, Wednesday, December 20, will be held in Moorea at CRIOBE at 2.30 pm a conference on marine turtles by Jean-Baptiste SENEGAS. Jean-Baptiste has been director for 15 years of the care center for Mediterranean sea turtles: the CESTMED, the only care center on the French Mediterranean coast.

Abstract: The loggerhead turtle is the most widespread species in the Mediterranean Sea, like all species of sea turtles, it is protected internationally. To participate in its protection, Jean-Baptiste SENEGAS and his colleagues created the CESTMED , a medical center in the Mediterranean sea but also a scientific and educational tool. 2018 will be a year of innovation for CESTMED. Search for nests using sniffer dogs, follow turtles using transmitters and use marine turtles  as bio-indicator will be presented as future projects after a review of the actions of the center (www.cestmed.org). The CESTMED develops a partnership with the marine turtle care center based in Moorea and created by the association Te mana o te moana (www.temanaotemoana.org) Both centers are part of the Group Turtles Marines France (GTMF). “

As part of the teaching unit  “conservation biology & invasions in the islands”, the training  meant the emblematic marine species of French Polynesia, but the focus was on the place occupied by the marine turtle in terms of Polynesian traditions and culture. Students also had a vision of the status of sea turtles around the world.

We have also conducted discovery workshops based on our 3 themes: marine turtles, marine mammals and coral reefs in French Polynesia. Thank you to David Lecchini, Deputy Director Ircp (Institute of coral reefs of the Pacific) and EPHE (école pratique des hautes études) professor, which is attached to the CRIOBE (Island Research Centre and Environmental Observatory). 37th International Sea Turtle Symposium https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/37th-international-sea-turtle-symposium/ Fri, 05 May 2017 00:37:36 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=11958 From the 15th to the 20th of April, our president Cecile Gaspar went to the 37th International Sea Turtle Symposium (ISTS), which took place at Las Vegas.

This marking event has united more than 800 international scientists specialized in sea turtles, to exchange on ongoing projects, discover or teach new methods, share the advances and most of all to strengthen the collaboration between scientists and institutions from all over the world. During 5 days, 13 workshops, tens of oral presentations and hundreds of posters have been presented, on many subjects linked to sea turtles ‘ biology and ecology.

Because sea turtles are migratory species and therefore depend on international conservation plans, and also because they are endangered, this type of event is essential and determining for the conservation of these species.

For the occasion, our organisation has presented a poster on the results of several years of nesting monitoring on the atoll of Tetiaroa, a program undertaken in collaboration with the Direction of the Environment of French Polynesia, the non profit organisation Tetiaroa Society, and the hotel The Brando. Cécile has also joined other members of the French Sea Turtle Group (GTMF).

We also thank Air Tahiti Nui for allowing us to participate to the event !

At least, 2 sessions were delivered and 20 inhabitants of the both islands were  trained as “Reef Check Ecodivers”. They are now ready for the monitoring of reefs! They will detect as scientists new disturbance and will get a better knowledge of the coral reefs’ health of their island. The datas collected every year will help scientists to get information from the far away islands where no scientific monitoring is done.1937087_1142694092417085_261753284813206626_n
Thanks to Air Tahiti Nui, Ifrecor Polynésie and Reef Check France that helped us to set up the Reef Check Program and trained volunteers during the all year long (we will organise a session in the far away islands from French Polynesia soon).
