Our interventions in the Tuamotu Islands https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/our-interventions-in-the-islands-of-society/ Sat, 16 Dec 2017 01:14:58 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=12859
After the Society Islands, the association’s team visited the island of Rangiroa in order to continue its awareness-raising activities. It is 5 new eco-sentinels that were formed during the public day organised on Saturday 18 November at the premises of the town hall of Avatoru.
With the support of the municipalities, public training helps to raise awareness among adults about the protection of the marine environment and to train focal points which will then take over the transmission of information and the collection of data on the Polynesian Marine world.
With regard to schools, 10 classes and 213 pupils were sensitized. Interventions took place over 4 days thanks to the involvement and active participation of teachers and principals who supported the project. Our Marine Biologist, Alice, has conducted intervention sessions from one to two hours to inform and involve children and teachers in the conservation of Marine Turtles, Marine mammals and coral reefs and to a better knowledge of them through collection of informations.
The following week, the Rangiroa College celebrated the feast of science during which Te mana o te moana was present. Once again this year, our association has focused its message on the need to preserve the marine environment and the life it houses thanks to numerous games, booklets, posters, etc. The technique of photo identification of sea turtles was therefore honored once again … a way to identify sea turtles that fascinates children and adults.
More than 300 students have been sensitized during this day.

On this occasion, the actors of the scientific life (researchers, doctoral engineers etc.) and the populations (adults and schoolchildren) meet in a festive space of exchange and sharing. This year’s theme was “research and innovation at the service of society”.
We were able to spread the word about the involvement of the general public in participatory science through the Hei moana project and raise awareness once again about the protection of our marine environment. Almost 3000 people answered the call, mostly children and students from Tahiti schools.

First meeting for the Marine Educational Area label https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/first-meeting-for-the-marine-educational-area-label/ Thu, 19 Oct 2017 19:16:43 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=12659 Last month was held the first meeting of generation 4 of schools wishing to obtain the Marine Educational Area label (AME).
As a reminder, the label is awarded to schools that engage in a process of participatory management of the marine environment. This label highlights their commitment to the protection of the marine environment. The schools will have to respect a charter and a specification to obtain the label. It is therefore a participative management approach involving pupils around a project of citizen action of knowledge and management of the marine environment. In French Polynesia, this concept is carried out by the DGEE (General Direction of Education and Teaching of French Polynesia) and initiated by the AFB (French Association for Biodiversity) and Motu Haka, in partnership with Te mana o te moana and Créocean a design office with whom we have collaborated since our origins
As a member of the COPIL of the AME label, our association went to this meeting. We were able to participate in the presentation of the label to the schools wishing to obtain the labeling and the steps to be taken to achieve it . A second meeting is planned at the end of the year for the schools to present their progress in relation to the process.
