Students from the University of French Polynesia certified for the monitoring of coral reefs ! https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/students-from-the-university-of-french-polynesia-certified-for-the-monitoring-of-coral-reefs/ Thu, 09 Mar 2017 02:24:09 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=11771

As part of their degree program in ecology (marine ecosystems modules, coordinated by Prof. Nabila Gaertner-Mazouni), students from the University of French Polynesia enrolled in a 3 years biology licence, benefited from a Reefcheck training program. Reef Check Polynésie, coordinated by our non-profit organization Te mana o te moana, aims at involving motivated volunteers in Reefcheck monitoring program, as coral reef ecosystems are rich and vital for many insular populations and consist of a biodiversity hotspot. The collected data is then sent to Reef Check International and serves as a base both for scientific programs and for better management of marine areas. Students participated to both practical and theorical sessions animated by the marine biologist Matthieu Petit, which aimed at providing to the students all the necessary tools to be able to evaluate coral reefs health status and to participate to the census of many fish and invertebrate species.

They swam through Punaauia’s lagoon to count for butterfly fish, groupers or clams, note for bleaching events and mesure the coral cover. At the end of their training, the students have been certified Reef Check Ecodiver IndoPacifique, an internationally recognized certification. Thanks to this certification, they will be able to stay involved in the polynesian reefcheck network to contribute for a better understanding of coral reefs in French Polynesia.

This original initiative in Polynesia was made possible thanks to a partnership with the University of French Polynesia, our non profit organisation Te mana o te moana, Reef Check France and Reef Check International.

Tetiaroa : nesting season 2016/2017 https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/11738/ Mon, 20 Feb 2017 21:14:31 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=11738 Here are some photographs sent by our eco-volunteers and interns in live from our nesting monitoring program on Tetiaroa!

On this atoll composed of 12 motu (“small islands” in Tahitian), nesting green sea turtles are regularly observed between November and April. Every year since 2007, our organization, with an agreement of the Ministry of the Environment, ensures a field monitoring during the entire nesting season on Tetiaroa. This year, Antonin, Mai, Virginie, Margaux, Martijn and Cécile have succeeded one another in teams to collect data.

This year is a great season for the nesting of green sea turtles in Tetiaroa, with number of tracks and nests counted that have already outnumbered the ones from previous years. The results will be shared at the end of the season and the data will be precious information for the conservation of this endangered species.

We would like to thank our volunteers for their motivation and support (especially during the hard awaken nights!), Tetiaroa Society for their work all along the year, Pacsafe for the donation of bags very useful for the field but also Richard Bailey and the Ministry of the Environment for their crucial help.

A review of Reef Check activities in 2015-2016 https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/a-review-of-reef-check-activities-in-2015-2016/ Mon, 13 Feb 2017 22:06:38 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=11658
In 2015, our organisation took over the coordination of Reef Check Polynesia, an international program that monitors coral reefs evolution through a trained volunteer network. After two years of relaunch of the program in French Polynesia, we are happy to present the report of the activities undertaken in 2015-2016. The report can be downloaded online on the website.

What is Reef Check method ?
The method Reef Check consists of monitoring coral reefs while snorkeling or diving on some specific studies sites, one to two times per year. A long scale line is set at the bottom of these sites (called a « transect »), and some key species encountered ,such as some species of fish and invertebrates, are counted along the line.
It is then possible to contribute actively to the management of protection plans by transmitting all data collected year after year to scientific institutes and decision makers. By following the evolution of coral reefs’ health, volunteers become sentinels of the ocean.

Looking back on the 2015-2016 activities, here are some key numbers :

    • 5 trainings have been organised on Tahiti, Moorea and Bora Bora, and 29 new volunteers have been certified this year. At the end of 2016, Reef Check Polynesia is counting 34 volunteers who participate regularly in the program.
    • 11 monitored sites (called « stations ») have been created, including 10 on Moorea and 1 on Raiatea. Added to already monitored sites, there are now 30 stations on Moorea, 10 on Tahiti, 5 on Raiatea and 22 on Bora Bora by Reef Check Polynesia. On other islands, some sites have been created before 2015 and will need to be followed again.
    • 23 site monitorings have been organised on Moorea, 2 on Tahiti, and 2 on Raiatea, as well as 63 in Bora Bora by Denis Schneider’s team as part of the Pavillon Bleu’s label.

Volunteers participating to the Reef Check’s program help scientists by giving alerts in cases of the observation of mass coral bleaching events.

Since the beginning of 2016, Reef Check Polynesia’s team has been mobilised to respond to a call by Reef Check France for the watch of mass coral bleaching events, as a prevention to global coral bleaching events as they had occured on many coral reef areas such as in the Marquesas and in the Society islands. The results from this studies are exposed in the report.
This year has also been a busy year in events for Reef Chack Polynesia, with participation to the Reef Check France meeting in February in Paris, animations to many day events, participation to the shooting of a documentary on coral reefs and Tara expedition, and Reef check animations for kids in schools of Austral islands with our animators.

To better understand the risks linked to climate change on sea turtles https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/to-better-understand-the-risks-linked-to-climate-change-on-sea-turtles/ Wed, 08 Feb 2017 20:16:34 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=11629 Last November, Dr Jacques-Olivier Laloë, a post-doctoral researcher at the Deakin University in Australia, joigned our team to participate to the research and conservation program of nesting green sea turtles. Since 2004, we lead this program on Tetiaroa with an agreement of the Ministry of the Environment.
During his stay, he took part in the nesting monitoring program undertaken by our organization . Apart from helping to collect data on nesting females and on nests, he also deployed 25 thermologgers (small devices that measures sand temperature) on the different islands of the atoll. The data collected from these devices will follow up with temperature data that have been collected in the past year through this project. Our objective is to record sand temperature in the nest during several nesting seasons, in order to better understand the risks linked to climate change on sea turtles population. Indeed, the incubation temperature of a sea turtle nest has important implications on hatchling sex ratios.
This is one more step for the research that will help us to better know them.
This project  would not have been possible without the generous support of Air Tahiti nui that made it possible for Jacques-Olivier Laloë to travel to French Polynesia. Also, we would like to thank the Ministry of the Environment of French Polynesia who gave us the agreement to undertake such program.
