Release of Iona in Papara: A New Beginning for a Green Turtle Rescued in Reao

QUI-border

A beautiful story of resilience, solidarity, and marine life protection in Polynesia.

In December 2024, Iona, an adult male green turtle, was released back into the wild on the beach of Papara, Tahiti, after two months of intensive care at our rehabilitation center.

A Turtle Rescued in Reao

Iona was found trapped in a fishing net at Reao by the association Clermont Tonnerre. He was severely injured — with numerous wounds on his flippers and shell, as well as a bone infection.

He was taken care of at our center thanks to an extraordinary chain of solidarity:

  • Transfer arranged by Air Tahiti

  • With the support of the Ocean Guardians Network,

  • And the Environment Directorate of French Polynesia.

Two Months of Care and Monitoring

During his stay, Iona received specialized veterinary care, daily monitoring, and a lot of attention from our team and volunteers committed to marine species conservation. His gradual recovery was a strong sign of his resilience… and of the importance of human intervention in the face of threats to marine wildlife.

Released in Papara: A Powerful and Emotional Moment

It was on the beach of Papara that Iona returned to his natural habitat, witnessed with emotion by the participants who came to celebrate this important milestone in his journey.

A big mauruuru to everyone present, as well as to our partners who contributed to the success of this release:

  • Richard Bailey, our President,

  • The Ministry of Education, Higher Education, and Culture,

  • The High Commission of the Republic in French Polynesia,

  • Our volunteers and nature enthusiasts.

Tracking Sea Turtles by Satellite: Innovations for Their Conservation in French Polynesia

QUI-border

Since 2007, the association Te mana o te moana has been committed to an ambitious and innovative project: the satellite tracking of sea turtles in French Polynesia. By using cutting-edge technology, this program provides valuable insights into the migratory behavior of these iconic species, helping to ensure their protection.

Tags to Better Understand the Oceanic Routes of Turtles

In partnership with the Environment Directorate of French Polynesia (DIREN), approximately 40 satellite tags have already been deployed on several species of sea turtles, notably green turtles (Chelonia mydas) and hawksbill turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata).

These transmitters, carefully attached to the turtles’ shells, allow to:

  • Track their movements in the Pacific Ocean, especially during migration periods,

  • Measure environmental data such as water temperature,

  • Collect valuable information for scientific research and conservation efforts.

Tracking Conducted from Several Islands and Atolls

Te mana o te moana has contributed to the tagging of turtles at various sites across Polynesia, with a renewed momentum recently given to this program thanks to the support of Aquarium La Rochelle, DIREN, and The Brando.

Juvenile Turtles Tagged on the Tetiaroa Atoll

At the same time, 10 resident juvenile green turtles of the Tetiaroa Atoll have been fitted with acoustic tags. This system allows tracking their distribution within the lagoon and studying:

  • Their behavior,

  • Their movements on a small scale,

  • Their use of the marine habitat.

Promising Results Under Analysis

The initial results of the program are very encouraging. The recorded tracks reveal sometimes unexpected routes and highlight how far sea turtles travel across the Pacific.

Ongoing analyses will soon provide a clearer understanding of their migratory behavior, site fidelity, and the threats they may encounter at sea.

Technology Serving Nature

The use of technology, combined with field expertise, represents a major advancement for marine conservation. With these tools, Te mana o te moana strengthens its mission: to protect sea turtles and raise awareness among future generations about their preservation.

Our interventions in the Tuamotu Islands https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/our-interventions-in-the-islands-of-society/ Sat, 16 Dec 2017 01:14:58 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=12859
After the Society Islands, the association’s team visited the island of Rangiroa in order to continue its awareness-raising activities. It is 5 new eco-sentinels that were formed during the public day organised on Saturday 18 November at the premises of the town hall of Avatoru.
With the support of the municipalities, public training helps to raise awareness among adults about the protection of the marine environment and to train focal points which will then take over the transmission of information and the collection of data on the Polynesian Marine world.
With regard to schools, 10 classes and 213 pupils were sensitized. Interventions took place over 4 days thanks to the involvement and active participation of teachers and principals who supported the project. Our Marine Biologist, Alice, has conducted intervention sessions from one to two hours to inform and involve children and teachers in the conservation of Marine Turtles, Marine mammals and coral reefs and to a better knowledge of them through collection of informations.
The following week, the Rangiroa College celebrated the feast of science during which Te mana o te moana was present. Once again this year, our association has focused its message on the need to preserve the marine environment and the life it houses thanks to numerous games, booklets, posters, etc. The technique of photo identification of sea turtles was therefore honored once again … a way to identify sea turtles that fascinates children and adults.
More than 300 students have been sensitized during this day.

Awareness tour in the Australes, with Pew Polynesia support https://www.temanaotemoana.org/en/awareness-tour-in-the-australes-with-pew-polynesia-support/ Fri, 01 Dec 2017 18:31:47 +0000 http://www.temanaotemoana.org/?p=12811 Since last week, the school awareness tour in the Australes has continued in Tubuai and in Rimatara. Indeed, thanks to the support of Pew Polynesia, our animators travel the southern islands to explain to school the different marine environment management plans (PGEM, AMP, ZPR, Rahui, etc.) and the benefit of setting up collective initiatives like a ” Rahui Tamari ” or a request for the label” AME ” (Marine educational area).
For two weeks, students from the islands of Rimatara and Rurutu received Magali in one morning for an information session followed by a session on site where children accompanied by their teachers were able to choose a marine area for the study of its environment. It is, among other things, the Reef Check method that they discovered through the counting of certain species of fish (e.g. Butterfly Fish etc), invertebrates (e.g.: Sea Urchins, hava ‘ e, clams) and types Corals (massive etc) while learning to recognize episodes of coral bleaching.
In Total, more than 100 pupils have been sensitized to the protection of the marine environment.

The theme proposed was childhood and youth. Children were therefore honored. For the first time, fun, creative and educational workshops were organized. We animated the game “Ilécolo” for two Saturday afternoons in the gardens of the Museum of Tahiti.
You can support our association by buying the game “Ilécolo” designed by Te mana o te moana and all the benefits will be dedicated to its actions of education, research and conservation. Click here for more information.
