Its contents have been designed according to the national educational standards, and <strong><span style=\"color: #008080;\">validated by the DEP<\/span> <\/strong>(Department of Primary Schools) of French Polynesia.<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/education\/turtles\/attachment\/dsc02114\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-749\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-749\" title=\"DSC02114\" src=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/DSC02114-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"284\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/DSC02114-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/DSC02114-600x450.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/DSC02114-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/DSC02114-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 284px) 100vw, 284px\" \/><\/a>The <strong>duration and contents<\/strong> of the program vary according to the level of the class (maximum 2h30 long).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The first part presents the \u201cworld of turtles\u201d<\/strong>, and gives the opportunity to learn about the differences between turtles living in the sea, in freshwater or on the land. The children are taught that turtles are reptiles, and compare their characteristics with those of marine mammals such as dolphins.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After that, they learn how to <strong>distinguish the two species<\/strong> most frequently seen in Polynesia: green turtles and hawksbill turtles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/education\/turtles\/attachment\/le-tour-de-moorea\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-750\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-750\" title=\"le tour de moorea\" src=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/le-tour-de-moorea--300x247.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"258\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/le-tour-de-moorea--300x247.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/le-tour-de-moorea--600x495.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/le-tour-de-moorea--363x300.jpg 363w, https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/le-tour-de-moorea-.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 258px) 100vw, 258px\" \/><\/a>The kids then get together in small groups of 4-6 to play <strong>various games and activities<\/strong>: a good way to learn more while having fun.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The educator then talks about <strong>protection of environment<\/strong>, and takes everybody to the <strong>Turtles\u2019 Clinic<\/strong> for an unforgettable visit. It is also distributed <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">on a DVD<\/span> and has been <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">officially recognized and validated\u00a0 <\/span>by the Department for Primary Schools, certifying that its contents matches with the official school program of French Polynesia.<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><a href=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/education\/turtles\/attachment\/allege-fdmulti\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-738\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"all\u00e9g\u00e9 FDMULTI\" src=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/all\u00e9g\u00e9-FDMULTI-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"213\" \/><\/a>Objectives<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Te mana o te moana created the \u201cHonu toolkit\u201d to provide schools and teachers with the <strong>necessary tools to increase awareness<\/strong> of future generations on the conservation of sea turtles and French Polynesia\u2019s natural heritage.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While studying this program, educators should encourage students to share their acquired knowledge <strong>with their families<\/strong>, who, in turn, might commit to the sea turtle conservation effort.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ultimately, the goal of this program is to <strong>contribute to the preservation of sea turtles<\/strong>, by reducing their anthropogenic threats, such as the consumption of sea turtle meat or eggs, use of their shell, and marine pollution.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" title=\"Digital Camera\" src=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/MAHAREPA-2-159x213.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"234\" \/><\/strong>Contents<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The toolkit has been developed in collaboration with the Department for Primary Schools of Moorea-Maiao.<\/strong> The \u201cHonu toolkit\u201d is intended for elementary and primary school students (Kindergarten through 6th grade).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Two exemplaries of the \u201cHonu toolkit\u201d chests are available<\/strong> for schools since the beginning of the school year 2009\/2010.\u00a0 The first chest is intended for the schools in Tahiti and Moorea, while the second one will travel around the other archipelagos.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Each Primary school of French Polynesia can get for free an exemplary of the Honu chest during a month or more<\/strong>, in order to work within the class on an educational project based on sea turtle conservation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Digital Camera\" src=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/honu-toolkit1-159x213.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"174\" height=\"234\" \/>The honu toolkit comprises:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>more than 30 educational tools<\/strong> (books, educational games, posters, DVD and other educational resources), to provide educators with a multitude of activities that can be adapted to various grade levels<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>a teacher&#8217;s guidebook<\/strong> composed of scientific and educational parts<\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>an exercise book<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>The <span style=\"color: #ff00ff;\">Honu Chest<\/span> on a DVD<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This project was also designed to incorporate already existing media developed by worldwide partners and teaching aids on sea turtles, on a bilingual DVD (French-English).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This DVD will <strong>spread interest within the educational network<\/strong>, and thus raise awareness for an increasing numbers of students on the protection of sea turtles in French Overseas Departments and Territories along with the other islands of the South Pacific (with the help of the SPREP).<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>Financial justify;\">As part of a Conservation and Education project, te mana o te moana has worked on a synthesis on &#8220;Climate changes and Sea turtles&#8221;.
