Its contents have been designed according to the national educational standards, and <strong><span style=\"color: #000080;\">validated by the Department of Primary Schools<\/span><\/strong> (DEP) of French Polynesia.<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This educational program is for <strong>Cycle 3<\/strong> classes only. The first part of the program takes place inside. A <strong>video on coral reefs<\/strong>, their ecology, their species and their threats, is shown to the children.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Several <strong>interactive games and activities<\/strong> are proposed to the children after that, and help them understand the richness of the underwater world.<\/p>\n<div><a href=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/education\/coral-reefs\/attachment\/sentierbriefplage\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7199\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7199 alignleft\" title=\"sentierbriefplage\" src=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/sentierbriefplage.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" \/><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/education\/coral-reefs\/attachment\/sentierentreedansleau\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7200\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7200 alignleft\" title=\"SentierEntreedansleau\" src=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/SentierEntreedansleau.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"113\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The second part of the program consists in the <strong>visit of the underwater trail<\/strong>, created in the lagoon of the Hotel InterContinental Resort &amp; It has then been <strong>entirey translated into French, and adapted to the Polynesian local context<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A <strong>free of charge<\/strong> educational kit called &#8220;Sustainable reefs&#8221; was given to all CM2 classes (students aged 8 to 12) of all Polynesian public and private schools prior to the beginning of the 2007-2008 schoolyear.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition, during the schoolyear, <strong>presentations on coral reefs<\/strong> were given in schools by <strong>specially trained educators<\/strong> from te mana o te moana.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>&#8220;Sustainable Reefs&#8221; has reached <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">4205 students<\/span> aged 8 to 12, and <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">173 teachers<\/span> (this represents <span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">80 % of the classes of this age range<\/span>). They all have been provided with resources in order to start an educational project with their class on coral reefs.<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/education\/recifs-coralliens\/attachment\/cousteaugambiers\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4133\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-4133\" title=\"CousteauGambiers\" src=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CousteauGambiers.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CousteauGambiers.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/CousteauGambiers-159x213.jpg 159w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Geographical range of the project:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>22 islands<\/strong> have received this presentation (there are 121 islands in French Polynesia &#8211; 76 islands are inhabited and 35 islands have at least one school)<br \/>\n<strong>Marquesas :<\/strong> Ua Pou, Nuku Hiva, Ua Huka, Hiva Oa<br \/>\n<strong>Australes :<\/strong> Rurutu, Tubuai<br \/>\n<strong>Tuamotu :<\/strong> Tikehau, Rangiroa, Manihi, Ahe, Fakarava, Hao, Takaroa, Makemo, Arutua<br \/>\n<strong>Leeward Islands :<\/strong> Huahine, Tahaa, Raiatea, Bora Bora, Maupiti<br \/>\n<strong>+ All schools in Tahiti and Moorea<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/education\/recifs-coralliens\/attachment\/srmallette2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4132\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-4132\" title=\"srmallette2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/srmallette2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"101\" \/><\/a><strong>Educational kits and cartoon books (one per student)<\/strong> remain a school property. These educational resources have been used by educators each year, <strong>raising awareness amongst about 20,000 students in 5 years<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Educational Resources\" href=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/education\/pedagogic-resources\/\"><strong>&gt;&gt; More information on the content of the &#8220;Sustainable Reefs&#8221; toolkit<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Te mana o te moana also announced a <strong>school contest<\/strong> on coral reefs for CM2 schoolchildren. The results of the contest have been announced on the <strong>8th of June 2008<\/strong>, the <strong>World Ocean Day<\/strong>. Children were asked to create awareness raising tools for the public on coral reefs protection (poster, leaflet or video).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This project has been implemented in partnership with <a title=\"Partners\" href=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/about-us\/partners\/\">Ocean Futures Society<\/a>, with support from Paul and Karen Freeman, <a title=\"Partners\" href=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/about-us\/partners\/\">InterContinental Hotel French Polynesia group<\/a>, <a title=\"Partners\" href=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/about-us\/partners\/\">IFRECOR<\/a>, the Polynesian <a title=\"Partners\" href=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/about-us\/partners\/\">Ministry of Sustainable Development<\/a>, the Polynesian <a title=\"Partners\" href=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/about-us\/partners\/\">Ministry of Education<\/a>, <a title=\"Partners\" href=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/about-us\/partners\/\">Moorea Dolphin Center<\/a>, <a title=\"Partners\" href=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/about-us\/partners\/\">Air Tahiti<\/a>, Aremiti, Reef Check.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><a href=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/education\/recifs-coralliens\/attachment\/roses\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4154\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4154\" title=\"Roses\" src=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Roses.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"197\" \/><\/a>A <strong><span style=\"color: #cc99ff;\">book<\/span><\/strong> on <strong><span style=\"color: #cc99ff;\">Coral Reefs<\/span><\/strong> in the French <strong><span style=\"color: #cc99ff;\">Overseas Territories<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h5>In the <strong><span style=\"color: #cc99ff;\">continuity of the \u201cSustainable Reefs&#8221; toolkit<\/span><\/strong>, te mana o te moana decided to create a complementary tool, targeting <strong><span style=\"color: #cc99ff;\">teenagers<\/span><\/strong> and highschools students in <strong><span style=\"color: #cc99ff;\">French overseas territories<\/span><\/strong>.<\/h5>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Truly oasis of life, and basis of alimentation for all people living near coastal areas, coral reefs are a source of employment for more than 100 million persons throughout the world. <strong>For inhabitants of French overseas territories, this natural heritage is essential for life.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, the economic, as well as aesthetic importance of coral reefs is little considered.
