Considering the stakes, regarding these endangered and protected species&#8217; conservation, the Observatory is an important tool for awareness raising and participatory management.<\/h5>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Observatory&#8217;s mission is also the creation of educational tools, especially in Tahitian language, training sessions, and implementation of new research and conservation initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #888888;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/observatoires\/observatoire-des-tortues-marines\/attachment\/tortue-photo-bandeau-ancien-site\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-3137\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3137\" title=\"Tortue verte\" src=\"http:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Tortue-photo-bandeau-ancien-site.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"188\" \/><\/a>Sea turtles:<br \/>\nProtected but still endangered species<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>In French Polynesia, 5 species of sea turtles are currently listed<\/strong>: the Loggerhead (<em>Caretta caretta<\/em>), the Hawksbill turtle (<em>Eretmochelys imbricata<\/em>), the Leatherback (<em>Dermochelys coriacea<\/em>), the Olive Ridley turtle (<em>Lepidochelys olivacea<\/em>) and the Green turtle (<em>Chelonia mydas<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hawksbill turtles and Green turtles are the most frequently seen in French polynesia, but <strong>the Green turtle is the only species killed for meat<\/strong>.<br \/>\nSince 1971, the Government of French Polynesia has created legal tools to ensure the protection of sea turtles. <strong>All sea turtles listed in French Polynesia are legally protected.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, these regulations obviously fail to protect the species facing an <strong>intense and uncontrolled commercial poaching<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In this context, the Sea Turtles Observatory offers <strong>an important tool for participatory management of sea turtles.<\/strong> It involves local communities in the collection of information, while raising awareness amongst them. Observation Network&#8230; becoming the new Observatory<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <strong>Sea Turtles Observation Network<\/strong> in French Polynesia was created at the end of the year <strong>2007<\/strong> by te mana o te moana, in order to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>raise awareness<\/strong> by involving local communities,<\/li>\n<li><strong>collect as much information as possible<\/strong> on marine turtles sighted in all Polynesian islands, in order to better know their population and better understand their repartition and movements.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Sea Turtles Observation Network was actually the <strong>first step<\/strong>, and gradually became the <strong>Sea Turtles Observatory<\/strong>.
