{"id":27679,"date":"2025-05-12T21:34:04","date_gmt":"2025-05-13T07:34:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/copy\/"},"modified":"2025-05-22T13:33:56","modified_gmt":"2025-05-22T23:33:56","slug":"copy","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/en\/copy\/","title":{"rendered":"Satellite Tracking Program"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1  data-animation-delay=\"0.0\" data-animation-duration=\"1\">\n\t\t\tSatellitaire TRACKING\t<\/h1>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/QUI-border.png\" alt=\"QUI-border\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"11\" width=\"444\" title=\"QUI-border\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading='lazy' \/>\n\t<h3 data-start=\"202\" data-end=\"309\"><strong>Understanding turtle migrations though satellite tagging<\/strong><\/h3>\n\tSince 2006, continuous efforts have been made in French Polynesia to better understand the movements and behaviors of <strong>sea turtles through satellite tracking.<\/strong><br data-start=\"264\" data-end=\"267\" \/>In 2024, the association <strong>Te mana o te moana<\/strong> was commissioned by the <strong>DIREN<\/strong> (Department of the Environment) to carry out a <strong>comprehensive review of satellite tracking conducted in the territory.<\/strong>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/484981494_1061620556003656_6920791001399899797_n.jpg\" alt=\"484981494_1061620556003656_6920791001399899797_n\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"650\" width=\"855\" title=\"484981494_1061620556003656_6920791001399899797_n\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading='lazy' \/>\n\t<strong data-start=\"100\" data-end=\"132\">The objective of this study:<\/strong> to centralize, standardize, and analyze nearly 20 years of data collected on sea turtles equipped with satellite tags, in order to identify their <strong data-start=\"279\" data-end=\"299\">migration routes<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"301\" data-end=\"321\">at-sea behaviors<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"327\" data-end=\"386\">interactions with oceanographic features of the Pacific<\/strong>.\n\t<h3 data-start=\"202\" data-end=\"309\"><strong>A groundbreaking analysis of 41 tagged turtles<\/strong><\/h3>\n\tThis project came to fruition thanks to the collaboration between <strong data-start=\"79\" data-end=\"198\">DIREN and NOAA, who provided their valuable data.<\/strong> In total,<strong> 41 individuals<\/strong> (adults and juveniles) equipped with tags were studied. These analyses provide <strong>new insights into the migratory strategies of sea turtles in French Polynesia.<\/strong>\n<h2  data-animation-delay=\"0.0\" data-animation-duration=\"1\">\n\t\t\tKEY RESULTS OF THE STUDY\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/QUI-border.png\" alt=\"QUI-border\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"11\" width=\"444\" title=\"QUI-border\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading='lazy' \/>\n\t<strong>Adult green turtles<\/strong> nesting at <strong>Tetiaroa<\/strong> undertake an impressive <strong>trans-Pacific migration<\/strong>, traveling from <strong>east to west towards the Fiji Islands, their main feeding area.<\/strong>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/485874468_1062019135963798_8314542239016030644_n.png\" alt=\"485874468_1062019135963798_8314542239016030644_n\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"600\" width=\"800\" title=\"485874468_1062019135963798_8314542239016030644_n\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading='lazy' \/>\n\t<p><strong>Juvenile turtles<\/strong>, on the other hand, <strong>remain near the coasts of islands and atolls<\/strong>, where they continue to <strong>grow and develop<\/strong> until they reach sexual maturity.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/485693386_1062019415963770_627930721741099274_n.png\" alt=\"485693386_1062019415963770_627930721741099274_n\" itemprop=\"image\" height=\"600\" width=\"800\" title=\"485693386_1062019415963770_627930721741099274_n\" onerror=\"this.style.display='none'\" loading='lazy' \/>\n\t<h2 data-start=\"1965\" data-end=\"2019\"><strong>A SCIENTIFIC TOOL FOR CONSERVATION<\/strong><\/h2>\n<strong>This satellite tracking<\/strong> is an essential tool to strengthen sea turtle protection efforts in French Polynesia.
