Fill out an observation sheet for each phenomenon observed on the Pacific Coral Reef Institute (IRCP) website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ircp.pf\/participez\/fiche-dobservation\/\"><span style=\"color: #008080;\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/span><\/a> to help monitor our reefs!<\/p>\n<p>Since January, many testimonials were received mentioning the bleaching of corals on the outer\u00a0slopes of the reef but also in the lagoon of Moorea.<br \/>\nBased on the observations from our teams last week in the Moorea lagoon, all types of corals are impacted:\u00a0tabular corals, encrusting corals, branching corals, etc.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-16655\" src=\"https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/blanchissement-320x213.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"213\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/blanchissement-320x213.jpg 320w, https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/blanchissement-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.temanaotemoana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/blanchissement.jpg 641w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Coral bleaching is a phenomenon of coral die-back\u00a0which results in its discoloration, following the expulsion of symbiotic zooxanthellae or due to the loss of algae&#8217;s pigmentation. When the coral bleaches, it does not mean that it dies. Corals have the ability to recover. However, they are much more vulnerable to stress and especially temperatures.<\/p>\n<p>On a global scale, recent studies report a coral bleaching phenomenon that occurs 5 times more than in\u00a01980.
