Te mana o te moana’s teams located on the island of Tetiaroa observed the first green sea turtle laying of\u00a0the\u00a0season on August 16th\u00a0on Onetahi motu. On the atoll throughout the laying season, the biologists and volunteers of our foundation have as a\u00a0main mission to account for\u00a0female traces\u00a0in the sand, to identify laying females, to confirm the nests and finally to make an inventory of\u00a0the number of hatchlings that came out\u00a0of the nest\u00a0and of the total number of laid eggs (some of them do not hatch).
\nAlso, when necessary, the teams protect the nests from predators and provide assistance to hatchlings when they are\u00a0stuck in the sand or have sustained injuries.<\/p>\n

Since the start of the 2020-2021 season, which will continue until April 2021, more than 189 laying female traces\u00a0have been identified on Tetiaroa atoll. 87 nests were confirmed\u00a0and 5 hatchings were successful. On the atoll, the observed average number of eggs per nest\u00a0is 80.<\/p>\n

During the night patrols, 20 new females were identified.\u00a02 females had already been observed nesting on the atoll: Arueroa identified in 2016 and Manureva identified in 2015, both on Onetahi\u00a0motu.<\/p>\n

Identification was achieved thanks to the placement\u00a0of\u00a0rings on\u00a0anterior fins but also thanks to the photo-identification of the head’s profiles,\u00a0a characteristic unique to each individual, equivalent to fingerprints in humans.<\/p>\n

Satellite monitoring recording turtle movements which were carried out in previous years with the installation of beacons showed their long migration after the laying phase. Turtles were recorded reaching\u00a0the Fijian waters\u00a0and returning to\u00a0mate and lay again on Tetiaroa after 3 to 5 years.<\/p>\n

These studies provide a better understanding of the green sea turtle\u00a0life cycle and is\u00a0a valuable aid for the development of recommendations on protective measures.<\/p>\n
