In September 2022, 2 green turtles were welcomed to the Moorea Sea turtle care center. First, H\u00e9lice, a sub-adult green turtle joined the Center after her \ud835\uddf1\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddee\ud835\ude01\ud835\uddf5 following a fatal injury from a boat propeller. H\u00e9lice had been seen alive by a boat excursion company but unfortunately could not be immediately recovered. Looking at what was left of her body from post-mortem natural predation, the obvious collision with a boat’s propeller was confirmed.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Also in September, Yo, a sub-adult green sea turtle was found dead on Paopao beach in Moorea with a \ud835\uddf1\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddfd \ud835\ude04\ud835\uddfc\ud835\ude02\ud835\uddfb\ud835\uddf1 to her shell. Given the injury, a boat collision leaves little doubt.<\/p>\n

In October 2022, Here joined the Care Center. She had a \ud835\uddf1\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddfd \ud835\uddee\ud835\uddfb\ud835\uddf1 \ud835\uddef\ud835\uddf9\ud835\uddfc\ud835\uddfc\ud835\uddf1\ud835\ude06 \ud835\ude04\ud835\uddfc\ud835\ude02\ud835\uddfb\ud835\uddf1 on her shell revealing internal organs, including her lungs. Again, given the type of injury, a collision with a boat is the most likely hypothesis.<\/p>\n

That same month, Lilly joined our residents after being picked up by Nemoz diving club with a \ud835\uddf1\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddfb\ud835\ude01 \ud835\uddf6\ud835\uddfb \ud835\ude01\ud835\uddf5\ud835\uddf2 \ud835\uddf0\ud835\uddee\ud835\uddff\ud835\uddee\ud835\uddfd\ud835\uddee\ud835\uddf0\ud835\uddf2 located on her 4th vertebral scale. The dent again is typical of a collision case.<\/p>\n

Finally, at the beginning of November, Jo Iti joined the Center following a \ud835\ude00\ud835\uddf5\ud835\uddf2\ud835\uddf9\ud835\uddf9 \ud835\uddf6\ud835\uddfb\ud835\uddf7\ud835\ude02\ud835\uddff\ud835\ude06 looking once again like it was created by a collision.<\/p>\n

This succession of individuals found injured or dead in Moorea lagoon suggests a clear link between the growing presence of turtles in Moorea lagoon and an excessive speed observed and reported on several occasions; a speed that is limited to 5 knots.<\/p>\n
