\n\t\t\tTracking Sea Turtles by Satellite: Innovations for Their Conservation in French Polynesia\t<\/h1>\n\t\t\t\t\"QUI-border\"\n\tSince 2007<\/strong>, the association Te mana o te moana<\/em><\/strong> has been committed to an ambitious and innovative project: the satellite tracking of sea turtles<\/strong> in French Polynesia<\/strong>. By using cutting-edge technology, this program provides valuable insights into the migratory behavior<\/strong> of these iconic species, helping to ensure their protection<\/strong>.\n

Tags to Better Understand the Oceanic Routes of Turtles<\/strong><\/h2>\nIn partnership with the Environment Directorate of French Polynesia (DIREN)<\/strong>, approximately 40 satellite tags<\/strong> have already been deployed on several species of sea turtles, notably green turtles<\/strong> (Chelonia mydas<\/em>) and hawksbill turtles<\/strong> (Eretmochelys imbricata<\/em>).\nThese transmitters, carefully attached to the turtles’ shells, allow to:\n

  • \nTrack their movements<\/strong> in the Pacific Ocean, especially during migration periods,\n<\/li>\n
  • \nMeasure environmental data<\/strong> such as water temperature,\n<\/li>\n

    Tracking Conducted from Several Islands and Atolls<\/strong><\/h2>\nTe mana o te moana has contributed to the tagging of turtles at various sites across Polynesia, with a renewed momentum recently given to this program<\/strong> thanks to the support of Aquarium La Rochelle<\/strong>, DIREN<\/strong>, and The Brando<\/strong>.\n

    Juvenile Turtles Tagged on the Tetiaroa Atoll<\/strong><\/h2>\nAt the same time, 10 resident juvenile green turtles<\/strong> of the Tetiaroa Atoll<\/strong> have been fitted with acoustic tags<\/strong>. This system allows tracking their distribution within the lagoon<\/strong> and studying:\n

    • \nTheir behavior,\n<\/li>\n
    • \nTheir movements on a small scale,\n<\/li>\n
    • \nTheir use of the marine habitat.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Promising Results Under Analysis<\/strong><\/h2>\nThe initial results<\/strong> of the program are very encouraging. The recorded tracks reveal sometimes<\/strong> unexpected routes and highlight how far sea turtles travel across the Pacific<\/strong>.\nOngoing analyses<\/strong> will soon provide a clearer understanding of their migratory behavior, site fidelity, and the threats they may encounter at sea.\n
