Created by Dr. Sylvia Earle, founding oceanographer and explorer, this foundation works for oceans exploration and protection. Mission Blue Hope Spots are extraordinary places that have been scientifically identified as critical to the oceans health.
Tetiaroa atoll was elected Hope Spot in 2019. A sanctuary for nesting green sea turtles and many sea birds species, the atoll is exposed to many risks due to the negative impact of climate change and the misuse of resources.
The research and conservation programs implemented on the atoll by Te mana o te moana and Tetiaroa Society include sea turtles protection, coral reefs restoration, shark ecology, archaeology, traditional fishing management and ocean acidification modeling.
