After more than 3 months of intensive care at the turtle clinic in Moorea, we are very pleased to announce the release of Oceane-Vaiana on Saturday, November 5th by the team of Tara Expeditions, the Puna Reo Association of Moorea with Maurice Rurua and with Maryline Dal Farra, technical consultant with the Ministry of Tourism, being there as well.
She was found floating by a Moorean fisherman in the lagoon of Haapiti. She was seriously weakened due to an infected wound located in the neck-area, undoubtely caused by a spear. Measuring 50 cm and weighing 14 kilos, she was renamed Vaiana at the moment she was released, referring to the release of the new Disney movie Moana (called Vaiana in French). She got off in the deep blue ocean with an incredible speed and energy. In association with Tara Pacific expedition, sensibilisation programs have been set up in Papeete and Moorea. The groups will stay in contact for the follow-up of the turtle observations along the way.
