Surgical removal of hook from accidentally caught green turtle.
Dona, a green turtle measuring 55cm, was accidentally caught in Papara a few weeks ago. X-rays revealed the presence of a hook stuck in the esophagus. After several examinations, it was decided to cary our surgery to remove the hook, in order to avoid excessive perforations and enable ger to eat normally without a risk.
The surgery was performed under general anaesthetic, and the hook has bee, successfully removed. However, it had completely perforated the oesophagus, with the barb in the external zone of the oesophagus.
Dona is now resting and under observation at the Sea turtle rehabilitation center. The wound is regularly disinfected and Dona seems to have recovered energy. We are monitoring her, in the hope that her evolution will be positive.
Many thanks to the veterinary clinic of Fariipiti and veterinarians Dr. Salier, Dr. Poiret and Dr. Peyrache for welcoming and assisting us for this surgery and to the Direction of the Environment of French Polynesia for its authorization and its support !
