Acoustic Tracking

Acoustic Tracking Project
This project aims to estimate the population size of sea turtles, identify their preferred distribution areas, and analyze their use of the lagoon and the outer reef slopes around Tetiaroa.
Initial results show relatively high densities of juvenile turtles in certain reef areas. The project seeks to confirm the hypothesis that the lagoon's food resources provide a sanctuary for green turtles in the region. This information is essential for the development of effective management and conservation initiatives, especially since no studies on habitat use by immature green turtles have ever been conducted in French Polynesia.
In 2024, 11 immature green turtles from the Tetiaroa lagoon were equipped with acoustic tags by our team.
This program is being carried out in two French territories in the South Pacific: Wallis and Futuna, and French Polynesia

Objectives of the Acoustic Tagging Project
This project aims to estimate the size of the sea turtle population, identify their preferred distribution areas, and analyze their use of the lagoon and outer reef slopes around Tetiaroa.
- Authorizations from the Environmental Department of French Polynesia (DIREN) for the deployment of acoustic tags on JUVENILE and SUB-ADULT SEA TURTLES.
- Analysis of the MOVEMENTS and DISTRIBUTION OF SEA TURTLES in the lagoon of the Tetiaroa atoll.
- Use of the ACOUSTIC RECEIVERS already deployed in the lagoon as part of other scientific projects.
