Sea turtle photo-identification is a method developed to identify individuals thanks to the unique 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐞𝐬.
In partnership with the Direction de l’Environnement Polynésie Française, we pursue our efforts with the 𝒐𝒃𝒔𝒆𝒓𝒗𝒂𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 𝒐𝒇 𝒎𝒂𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒆 𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒕𝒍𝒆𝒔 relying on participative science
The goal of this project is to learn more about sea turtles of French Polynesia and to estimate the abundance of their populations using photographic identification.
This technique has many advantages:
- Non-invasive
- Long-term tracking
- Low-cost
- Local population involvement

Send to : photoid@temanaotemoana.org
- Sea turtle profile pictures and a view from above
- Location of the observation (GPS coordinates if possible)
- Date of observation
When your photos are added in the database you will be informed if it’s a new individual identified or one already observed
If both profiles are sent and the individual has never been identified, you can name it!
By sending us your pictures you will be part of our network, receiving a newsletter about new sea turtles identified on a regular basis!
