IMPACS PROJECT

Knowledge and conservation of hawksbill turtles in the South Pacific
The IMPACS project (Initiative for the Knowledge and Conservation of Hawksbill Turtles in the South PACific) aims to develop a sustainable civic and scientific approach to the protection of sea turtles, particularly hawksbill turtles, an emblematic and endangered species.
This program is being implemented in two French territories in the South Pacific: Wallis and Futuna and French Polynesia.

IMPACS project objectives
The main objective of the project is to strengthen scientific and traditional knowledge about sea turtles in these two territories. To achieve this, several concrete actions are being implemented:
-
Collection and promotion of traditional knowledge related to sea turtles;
-
Creation of a citizen science network: organizing workshops, educational activities, and local training sessions to raise awareness and involve local communities;
-
Implementation of a joint scientific program between Wallis and Futuna and French Polynesia, aimed at harmonizing data collection on nesting green and hawksbill turtles.
Project duration: 2024 – 2026
