During February 2025, an emotional scene took place on Papara beach: Tohonu, a green turtle cared for over four months in our rehabilitation center, was released back into its natural habitat. This action, carried out in partnership with the Tahitian Surf Federation, is part of a strong movement to raise awareness and preserve marine biodiversity in French Polynesia.
Tohonu was rescued in a weakened and injured state and received attentive care from our team for several months. Thanks to our expertise and a suitable environment, she was able to fully regain her strength.
This release moment, held in the presence of the “surf section” class from Tuianu Le Gayic High School, was an opportunity to share our mission and pass on the importance of protecting marine species to the younger generation.
The Tahitian Surf Federation warmly welcomed our team to its facilities and actively took part in the release operation. This partnership, rooted in a shared commitment to protecting the marine environment, symbolizes the strong connection between sport, nature, and education.
As the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) in Nice approaches, and as part of the Year of the Ocean, this partnership perfectly illustrates the values upheld by Te mana o te moana:
Mobilizing local communities around ocean protection
Raising awareness about marine biodiversity, especially among youth
Collaborating with committed local stakeholders for a sustainable future
A big thank you to the Tahitian Surf Federation for their warm welcome, their commitment, and their ongoing support in our upcoming activities. We also thank:
Each turtle released is a victory for nature, and every partnership is one more step toward a sustainable Polynesia. Te mana o te moana continues to champion the cause of sea turtles, with you, for them, for the ocean.
