On Tuesday March 18 2025, on Vaiava Beach in Punaauia, Polynesian students had the unique opportunity to witness coral spawning during an event organized as part of the Educational Marine Area (AME) program. A powerful initiative filled with emotion, learning, and commitment to the ocean.
Led by the DGEE Polynesia, in partnership with the French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) and the association Tama No Te Tairoto, this morning event brought together:
155 students from various schools,
Officials and associations committed to marine conservation,
An educational team from Te mana o te moana, present to lead the workshops.
Around 7:30 a.m, the children had the chance to observe coral spawning live a fascinating natural phenomenon that is crucial for the reproduction of coral reefs, true pillars of marine biodiversity.
Our team led several fun and educational workshops to enable the students to:
Understand the ecological role of corals;
Discover how tropical marine ecosystems function;
Become aware of the threats facing these fragile environments (pollution, climate change, overfishing, etc.).
Objective: to train younger generations to become ocean ambassadors and encourage them to take action today to protect it.
At the end of the morning, students, supervisors, and speakers formed a symbolic human chain in support of the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3), to be held in Nice in June 2025.
This powerful gesture celebrated the collective commitment of Polynesian youth and highlighted the importance of environmental education in building a sustainable future.
